Bolton, Plymouth and Wednesday all played with three at the back and two up top against 'lesser' opposition tonight.

Rovers play with one (small but half decent striker)

It was crying out for 3 at the back.

They had 5 sometimes 6 at the back and we expect Freddie to live off scraps

With a low block, you have to get round the back and put decent crosses in

Something we rarely do.

but maybe they play with more urgency, we strolled about for nearly 80 mins going sideways and backwards.
just slow and laborious passing.

Great, thanks for letting us know. Means nothing. Most top teams play with 4 at the back and one up top.

The three that are going for automatic promotion don’t.
Surely you haven’t got us down as a ‘top team’ since November do you?

The obsession with two up top has to stop, I've been saying this for ages. It is not a better formation and just thinking we can switch to it on the fly when the players are meticulously drilled for a certain setup means it won't benefit us. Nearly all the top teams around Europe have stopped playing with two up top in favour of a more flexible front line. The best manager in the world, last season, played the whole of a season without a striker!

You are asking a set of players bought for one system to do totally different jobs in a system which plays two up top.

If we’ve bought players who can only ever play one system. We’re fcuked and deserve everything we get.

Ladapo played his best for Rotherham as part of a front two.
Broadhead led the line for Sunderland.
Chaplin's strongest position is as a number ten.
Donacien, Woolfenden, Burgess and Edmundson have all played their best being part of a back three.
Burns and Davis have proven their worth as wing backs.

The players were not brought in to stick with one system through hook or crook. They offer flexibility. So why not try something different when one up top is clearly not working, like tonight?

Walton
Donacien - Woolfenden - Burgess
Jackson - Morsy - Humphreys - Edwards
Chaplin
Ladpo - Broadhead

Finish with that and see what happens? In truth, we may as well lost considering all the good a draw has done.

That's not what I meant. We play a system and we have bought players who we think will best suit it. A CM in a 4-4-2 is a totally different CM to one in a 3-5-2/4-2-3-1, for example. You need different attributes. It's a targeted approach.

We create minimal real clear cut chances, the midfield 2 create little, out wide Burns is way way out of form.

The only Muff in Town.

This is Division Three in England in mid winter! You’re not going to win games with one up front. McKenna has to change it. His job is to win games not paint pretty pictures! Play 4-4-2 & start grinding out wins. You have to earn the right to play fancy football in this division.

what are they so meticulously drilled at then? apart from playing slow, laborious passing football, with little or no intensity.
we have a midfield that can't tackle or slide a pass into a forward in the box.
wide men who can't seem to find people in the box.
we are unable to play two decent halves of football in a match.

I'm not sure if 4-4-2 will work with Humphreys in there. This we need to go three at the back, use wing backs and two up top.

Personally I would have gone with the same XI that started the second half against Wednesday. They put in a very good performance from Broadhead's goal onwards, and it would have given them a chance to build relationships across the pitch.

I get others will argue McKenna gave the same team which faced Morecambe the chance to build on it against Cambridge, and they messed the bed, but we need consistency now. Not constant changes.

Tonight was not our strongest line up. Get that out there, give them five games then switch those out of form.

Sorry. I meant for Saturday. Not today.

I completely agree. Barring injury, we need to give a settled side 5 games. Not rotate players in to keep them happy. If you aren't starting, take your chance when you come on at half time and in training.

Clarke, Edwards and Broadhead tend to and did do this. How long were they on the pitch? Why didn't Burns, Donacien, Harness and Davis all of whom have done in the past?

Ah sorry, misunderstood.

My concern would be Clarke and Jackson on the right, considering they've never started a game together. But, then again, if we can't try to grow a relationship against Forest Green at home then who can we do it against?

For all the rotation, it does feel odd that Walton and Burns have been two of our weakest players, form wise, yet their places seem most secure in the starting line up.

Burns is spent, but only because teams expect him in there and know how he plays. He always takes players on the outside, where as in his first season he would come inside on occasion and then go outside again, putting his marker on their heels.

Now, they just put a faster LB up against him. I'd be tempted to get him and Davis to swap flanks sporadically/

We're also taking our crossing position too deep all the time for me, it's almost always from the goal line, (on both wings), rather than hitting early crosses in.

100% sure, Ioffa injured, we are down to bare bones, Smith and Windass up top, We started Adenerin , but he hardly had a touch we effectively played with ten tonight. Think thats 8 or 9 of our first 18 missing, Byers got a knock and went off at half time too, Bannan ,Windass and Palmer ran the game .Bannan withdrawn on 75 mins , and we played keep ball the last 15 as Morcombe settled for damage limitation.

We need bodies back soon ,might get away with it Saturday against Mk, but after that 5 much more testing games.
