That's a beauty. Can I ask what townland you in and I will have a quick look at it?

Brownshill Dolmen just outside Carlow town .

Not sure about the ethics of Carlow Hurlers standing on it!

I have a secret admiration for builder built dolmens and stone circles. My neighbour as a supreme stone circle with a central dolmen in his garden. I helped out with a couple of 'alignments' that should confuse the feck outta future archaeologists

But werent the Stonehenge stones teleported there by the same atlantean aliens that built the pyramids. sculpted the fjords and wrote the bible?

he wasnt very specific to be honest, just that he could build one easy, not to worry about planning and if I wanted a tarmac driveway leading up to it his mate Ronan could help with that but could he have the cash front as well

(can I just check you're not a builder called Mick from Sligo ... are you?)

Argh, it will be fine. The local GA team standing on it probably encouraged more visitors then its had for a while.
Think that's in Kernanstown, there should be or used to be 2 more in that area. Not sure if they kept in local library (they are supposed to be) but if you can get a look at excavation reports from the construction of M9 you will see there was a enormous amount of archaeology discovered in the Busherstown/Jamestown stretch of its construction. It would suggest a really dense neolithic landscape in that area. If you go on to the Historical environmental viewer(if you haven't already) you can check out all the monuments in your area and they give you a little bit of info on them

It's a probably a boring enough subject for a football forum but archaeologys relationship with the media, especially tv is large part of the reason you only see the same old narrative retold over and over again.
The majority of the 'archaeologists' you see on TV ( there are a couple of exceptions) are purely involved in raising there own archaeological profile (often but not always encouraged by the university or organisation they represent).
They aren't usually involved in the larger archaeological debate and they definitely aren't making TV analysing the latest research etc. They are just regurgitating the same kinda archaeology related format that the TV stations believe will be popular and receive the highest viewing figures.

Isn't that the same for any academic endeavour v 'popular' output?
Once you cross the line into becoming a TV personality your academic peers see you as compromised so you need to choose one path or the other. Or is that the way it was, rather than how it is now?

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Yes those motorway excavations are a great source of information.

Great audiobooks available for the less interested in Archeology.
https://www.tii.ie/technical-services/archaeology/audioguides/

As an aside, other major Civil Engineering works also necessitate archaeological digs and this one prevented me getting out my driveway!

John Tierney at Eachtra is really good at putting excavation results online and making them accessible to all. They put some of the bigger companies to shame.
I worked on the NRA (now aTII) Road excavations for 6-7 years during the celtic tiger. All the excavation reports are supposed to be deposited in local libraries but it is very hit and miss.
Excavations.ie as a summary of every excavation carried out in the country. ( is a legal requirement as part of archaeological licensing). But some of these are quite brief

On a related theme, one thing I really hate is dramatic re-enactments in history programmes. And I was never really fussed when Phil on Time Team operated the bellows to make some sort of implement.

No, unfortunately it still like that. For example if you were to put forward a proposal say for a documentary on a medieval graveyard you had recently excavated. No TV production company will have any interest. If you change title to vampires found in Medieval cemetery channel 5 will probably be interested (your institution will be happy)but your credibility as gone forever

This one is just up the road from the inlaws:

Pentre Ifan Cromlech, thought to be from about 3,500BC. I'm struggling to find a picture with people in for scale, but it would have been a fair old lump to move into place.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Ipswich is quite a good place for cemeteries. A couple spring to mind, one for its antiquity and one because it surprised me there was one.

https://www.ipswichstar.co.uk/news/22072328.ipswich-icons-hidden-cemetery-reveal

The former featured on a Channel 4 programme which I watched at the time, but I can't imagine the series would have had many viewers. Indeed, I may have only watched that programme in the series because it was about Ipswich.

I came across this today after Saul David plugged it on his Ukraine podcast. It's an interesting new approach and is seeking to address some of these issues.
If I had the time and cash, I'd probably partake.
