Just a bit before my time, anyone remember that game or indeed was there, sounds a cracker.

Wonder if there are any highlights of that game anywhere?

We didn’t but Burley’s Southampton side lost on penalties to Derby in the 2007 play-offs in a tie they would have won on away goals under the old system (lost 2-1 at home, won 3-2 away).

Bolton beat us in the semi finals on away goals in 1999 & Sheffield United had done the same in 1997. I recall we felt this was unfair as in each case, the away team in the second leg had an extra 30 minutes in which to score an away goal & I think the Football League then abolished the rule. Would have been fun if we had drawn 1-1 at home to Bolton in the second leg in 2000 & then NOT gone through on away goals.

Wow 48 years ago. Yes I was there too and am pretty sure that it is the only 5-4 that I have seen. In the deep distant part of my memory I had a thought that Allan Hunter had scored that day. I just checked and he scored the 2-2 equaliser. Wish I could remember more though!

I do remember it. It was my third ever game so I didn’t really appreciate how unusual it was. Not sure if I’ve seen another 5-4 since. I think Hamilton scored some for us and John Tudor got a hat trick for them? But the clearest memory was my mum clapping the last Newcastle goal. I had words.

I think there was another one

Forfar 5 East Fife 4

or was that one made up?!

I get the arguments against away goals, but I never minded them too much because they at least took into account what happened over both matches. The fairest way to deal with them would have been to abolish extra time. This would not have affected the results in either 1997 or 1999 (Bolton scored 2 of their away goals in the 90 minutes), though we'd have lost out at 90 minutes in 2000, so swings and roundabouts I suppose.

Penalties are a lottery that make me think, "Why bother with the preceding 210 minutes?"

This came up on my Twitter feed randomly, not the game in question but similar time.

I believe Warky made his debut in one of these ties?

The report from In Quest of Glory - Ipswich Town under Bobby Robson 1969-82 (Eastwood/Moyse) reads:

A breathtaking match on a pitch which cut up right from the start. Even the nine goals weren’t the whole story; Town’s Kevin Beattie and Newcastle’s Malcolm Macdonald hit the woodwork, Geoff Nulty had a goal disallowed and both sides had efforts cleared off the line.

Ipswich: Sivell, Burley, Mills, Talbot, Hunter, Beattie, Hamilton, Viljoen, Johnson, Whymark & Lambert.
Newcastle (manager Joe Harvey): McFaul, D. Craig, Barker, Smith, McCaffery, Nattrass (Gibb 45), Barrowclough, Nulty, Macdonald, Tudor & T. Craig

Goals: HAMILTON (4), Macdonald (7), Tudor (21), HUNTER (34), Tudor (41), JOHNSON (51), HAMILTON (54 & 64), Macdonald (84)

Referee: K Styles (Barnsley)
Attendance: 23,070

If you'd said to someone then "48 years later you'll be in division 3, playing Burton Albion, but getting a bigger crowd" which bit would have been the least believable?

Ah right, thanks. It must have been discussed on here because of the Burley link which is why it was ringing bells.
