48 years ago today Ipswich 5-4 Newcastle on 19:05 - Mar 15 with 2466 views | SmithersJones | I do remember it. It was my third ever game so I didn’t really appreciate how unusual it was. Not sure if I’ve seen another 5-4 since. I think Hamilton scored some for us and John Tudor got a hat trick for them? But the clearest memory was my mum clapping the last Newcastle goal. I had words.

Hamilton hat trick and Tudor and McDonald got a brace each. I was in the West stand with my three kids that day.

We went one better with a 6-4 against Crewe in 2004.

| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

48 years ago today Ipswich 5-4 Newcastle on 20:22 - Mar 15 with 2312 views | soupytwist | First game I ever went to. Been waiting for one to live up to that ever since! All I can really remember clearly is that I must have been in the corner of the Churchmans near the West stand as I remember being really close to the players as they came in and out of the tunnel. Can vaguely remember MacDonald getting two but not much else. I was 6 years old.
48 years ago today Ipswich 5-4 Newcastle on 20:50 - Mar 15 with 2270 views | ArnieM | Lol, I was at that game. I was a kid stood down at the front of the North Stand. It seemed every time we scored, so did they. It was a helluva and a helluva of an atmosphere that day. Weird thing is all I can remember during the game, was being able to see the whole length of the pitch through to the Churchman’s Stand , through Malcom MacDonald legs because when he faced the fans in the NS, his legs were SO bowed. Made me laugh as a kid !

Brilliant wasn’t it . I miss the away fans being under that big NS roof alongside Town fans. The noise was deafening.

48 years ago today Ipswich 5-4 Newcastle on 21:34 - Mar 15 with 2188 views | LegendofthePhoenix | I was there that day. I too remember how bowed MacDonalds legs were. The pitch was a quagmire, and also I remember MacDonald, who was supposedly the fastest player in the country, had a 3 yd head start but Beattie outpaced him to the ball.

I’ve not seen a 5-4 involving us, but I was at this match (non-ITFC alert). Palace were leading 4-3 after 90 mins only to throw it away in added on time. https://www.premierleague.com/video/single/1504505

I was a teenager at the time, and thought it was absolutely fantastic, a proper exciting game. Was a great atmosphere too.

We finished 3rd, but if there was 3 pts for a win instead of 2pts back then we would have won the league ahead of Derby and Liverpool.

Boo! Didn’t we later fall foul of the change in rules around away goals in the playoffs? It’s was much later on, but I can’t remember which season (Burley’s time presumably).

We didn’t but Burley’s Southampton side lost on penalties to Derby in the 2007 play-offs in a tie they would have won on away goals under the old system (lost 2-1 at home, won 3-2 away). [Post edited 16 Mar 2023 9:45]

48 years ago today Ipswich 5-4 Newcastle on 10:01 - Mar 16 with 1735 views | patrickswell | The report from In Quest of Glory - Ipswich Town under Bobby Robson 1969-82 (Eastwood/Moyse) reads: A breathtaking match on a pitch which cut up right from the start. Even the nine goals weren’t the whole story; Town’s Kevin Beattie and Newcastle’s Malcolm Macdonald hit the woodwork, Geoff Nulty had a goal disallowed and both sides had efforts cleared off the line. Ipswich: Sivell, Burley, Mills, Talbot, Hunter, Beattie, Hamilton, Viljoen, Johnson, Whymark & Lambert. Newcastle (manager Joe Harvey): McFaul, D. Craig, Barker, Smith, McCaffery, Nattrass (Gibb 45), Barrowclough, Nulty, Macdonald, Tudor & T. Craig Goals: HAMILTON (4), Macdonald (7), Tudor (21), HUNTER (34), Tudor (41), JOHNSON (51), HAMILTON (54 & 64), Macdonald (84) Referee: K Styles (Barnsley) Attendance: 23,070

48 years ago today Ipswich 5-4 Newcastle on 10:58 - Mar 16 with 1666 views | ArnieM | I was at that game. We literally got back fr9m the first replay to queue up Lund PR for tickets for the 2nd replay, only to make our way back to Filbert St which seemed like almost the next day . It was a queue of Town fans all along that A14 ( think it’s was the A45 then?), from Ipswich to Leicester. It was a helluva tussle between the two sides. Just look at that pitch though. Players would complain about that today lol !

48 years ago today Ipswich 5-4 Newcastle on 11:50 - Mar 17 with 1479 views | kpblues | I was at that game. If I remember rightly it was pouring with rain and although I had a season ticket me and my buddy weren't keen on going but my dad wasn't going to let a bit of rain put him off. He was right. What a match. Taught me never to let the weather get in the way of a match. As to the Leeds game it was the easily the best away atmosphere I have ever experienced with the Ipswich fans singing loudly all the way through. Even a few oldies made it in (Remember the old Ipswich Town anthem Keep right on the the need of the road?) Good times but they will be back hopefully ....!
