Solar panels are go... 14:36 - Apr 12 with 7293 viewsBent_double

Sorry, bit of a 'look at me' post, but my solar panel system has just been installed, commissioned, and is generating electricity....yipeee!!

It's only been working for about 3 hours, and it's generated 10kwh already...

Not bad for April!

For those with a battery, how much energy can it store?

We are putting in a 5.2KW battery. Currently we use around 8KW a day so should be fine. Electricity requirements from the house will be first run from the panels with the battery as a support/boost. Once it gets dark then the battery takes over. No electric draw and the battery gets charged. The major benefit I have is that I will have a 64kw battery sat on the drive so as soon as the battery is full and no electric draw in the house then I will charge my car and get some free mileage.

Mine is 8.2kwh, think they do a 9.5kwh as well - some people have multiple ones as well

We've had a 17 panel system for 3 years now and I regret not putting in a battery sooner. We'll be looking at rectifying that soon.

It must be a no-brainer if you work away from home during the day (or even if not, given energy prices it must make sense to use what you've generated during the day, not that I've looked at the figures). Shame you can't get rid of the standing charges when you're generating your own, as that would really make a difference to bills. But the energy companies know exactly what they're doing.

Do you have to have a smart meter?

According to the guy who completed my installation, yes.

The meter needs to be able to measure what you are sending to the grid, as well as what you are taking from the grid, but the app I now have on my phone gives me that anyway, but I guess the end-user cannot be trusted to give them the correct information!

I do not have a smart meter, but I'm on the old Feed In Tariff which generates payments to me based on how much energy I generate irrespective of how much of that energy I export back to the grid.
I expect that for the new tariffs you DO need a smart meter.

I would assume that’s needed anyway for your tariff payments. I get paid for what I generate and what’s returned to the grid. But I know the incentives were cut, so maybe that’s different now.

13.09kWh for us today....

And a cumulative environmental impact equivalent to 1.72 trees being planted (that's since installation in January).

Still waiting for approval of our SEG application.

Think I've planted 20-25 trees so far this year...

We went through the scheme run every September by Suffolk CC. I think many other councils use the same scheme.

https://solartogether.co.uk/landing

Basically all the expressions of interest the council gets are put out to tender in bulk, so you benefit from better prices. It won't necessarily be the same provider every year, but you've got the added backing of the County Council carrying out due diligence on the suppliers.

I’ve just signed up for the Essex c c scheme - so let’s see how this goes!

31.3 kWh today for us. It’s been a nice day ☀️, but not perfect (34.1 is our April daily record from 2021).

Shame nobody was here to use it.
