Maths until 18 10:52 - Apr 17 with 1225 viewsDJR

I'm not sure it's the vote-winner Sunak thinks it is or necessarily the answer to our problems, but I would wholeheartedly agree with this, which he said this morning.

"We make jokes about not being able to do maths. It’s socially acceptable. We say things like, ‘oh maths, I can’t do that, it’s not for me’ and everyone laughs. But we’d never make a joke like that about not being able to read.

So we’ve got to change this anti-maths mindset."

The Education secretary has said there isn't enough math teachers to do this.
Sunak doesn't even talk to the department his 'brilliant' idea affects.
It's just another example of the Tories trying to make life miserable for people.
Those people are all under 18 and can't vote yet so no votes lost with this policy.

Why would a lack of Maths teachers affect this?

I mean, it's not like the Tories are actually going to deliver on it.

Agree. We’re at the stage politically where they are going to announce things they have no intention of doing but will hold a Labour Government to account for not doing so

I await the Prime Miniatures comments on the anti home mindset. Millions of people are living in costly sub standard homes.

Sunak also said the UK was unusual among developed countries in not requiring local councils to provide adequate housing, rather than allowing billions to be squandered in paying landlords for over priced slums.

I've always found good competence at maths fairly cool myself. Problem is, the average person still thinks numeracy means you're square - root of the problem, IMHO.

Those opinions clearly don't add up to much, so they don't count. Is it possible to remove them from the equation?

Think that's way too much. If you start school at 5, then by my calculations that's 12 solid years of maths..

Working in the education sector myself, I can tell you there is already a shortage of Maths teachers for many schools and the whole idea is unworkable. If Ofsted outstanding and good schools are struggling to find maths teachers now, I hate to think what it is like for those with bad reputations and that is before we even take into account this looney tunes plan.

There are more and more teachers who are leaving the profession because of the way the sector is run in this country and it just shows you how out of touch the Tories are that they are talking about all these extra maths lessons, without showing any comprehension of the actual issues there already are with maths teacher shortages.

It's ALMOST like they are just trotting out soundbites that they think their core base and those close to it want to hear, regardless of the reality.

I would be far more concerned about the number of illiterate Brits. It's shocking just how many people can't spell basic words.

The number of maths teachers must be catastrophic if EVEN the outstanding schools are having difficulties finding them, it's very ODD, but a PRIME example of the mess this government has made of our education system.
