Daniel Norcross - what do any oldies like me think of this comment from Wiki 12:28 - Jul 31 with 2050 viewsKeno

"Norcross has been compared to the late TMS commentator John Arlott, in providing "an unusual perspective" to the commentary box"

Arlott is the master

I like Norcross but would I compare him to Arlott?

Norcross is below par on the team imo.

I like Norcross and could listen to him all day (and I often do!). It’s a stretch to compare him to Arlott maybe, but they are similar.

Cricket’s been blessed with great commentators. Richie Benaud Is probably the greatest/most iconic throughout most of my life (I would have only caught the very tail end of Arlott). David Lloyd too. Agreed, Blofeld, etc. Edit - and Brian Johnston of course- legend! Norcross is in that same company as one of the greats of the modern generation.

TMS must be consistently the best BBC commentary team. Miles above anything they provide for football.

Most of the commentators are fine. Norcross is the worst by a country mile.

I'm old enough to have listened to Arlott for several years and he was very good. Benaud was mostly on tv.
For me the best on TMS have been CMJ, Simon Mann and Arlott. Jon Agnew is up there, too.

Blofeld was good. Johnston was okay.

I do like Agnew, must admit. I've got TMS on now and it's passing the afternoon while I'm clearing out emails (and posting on here!).

There probably never will be another. He'd lived a life. Never really got over the death of his son, he was also a poet, a football fan (Reading) wine enthusiast, bibliophile, anti-apartheid, Liberal party candidate. All of this went into his commentary. He loved the game and , for the most part, the people who played it.

On the other hand I never quite got Blofield. I could tolerate him in small doses on TMS but when he became a caricature of himself I went off him.

As CLR James said, 'what do they know of cricket, who only cricket know'

Don't get me started on Kevin Pieterson.

As someone who grew up in Leigh on Sea and played as a kid for Westcliff Cricket Club I always enjoyed Trevor Bailey's contributions on TMS.

He was a decent footballer too and I think remains the only player to have scored 2,000 runs and taken 100 first-class wickets in a season.

I think he got his nickname The Boil when the Aussies couldn't pronounce Bailey

All the TMS people were and are terrific. Arlott? Brilliant. For tv, Richie Benaud was the summer. Tv wise, I also like a Achaea Holding. He doesn’t waste words. Pointing is good and so is Sky anchor Ian Ward.

For football commentary, Peter Jones and Bryon Butler were the best by a mile.
