How many cards could Stoke have had with a normal ref? 18:14 - Aug 12 with 1876 viewsAsa

I’m going for 26.

Pearson (4), Johnson (2), Stevens (3), lost count after that. So many deliberate fouls it was untrue.

I’m sure they should have been down to 10 men half way through that first half. Their no 20 was walking a tightrope….

On one hand I'm stood there thinking it's good to be able to put in a challenge that is a tad late and not get an automatic yellow but then we see ridiculously early yellows for JD and H for minimal time wasting and it makes a farce of the situation

Isn't it great to be able comfortably beat a side that tries to bully us like that?

How Stephens didn’t get one on a totting up process alone in the first half was beyond me.

At one point in the first half, he gave Burns 4 or 5 kicks when he was on the ground by the touch line, right in front of us, but also right in front of the lino on the Magnus stand side.

Almost certainly a minority view, but I thought the ref still helped us overall.

Not on the card count itself obviously but his relative leniency over fouls extended to the general play. There were lots of 50-50s and robust challenges that a more card-happy ref would probably have turned into fouls and disrupted the flow of the game. With the ref also OTT on the time-wasting, It meant that the game flowed as much as possible and Stoke could never escape our tempo and intensity.

I’m sure they’d have been more in the game if they had more time to regroup in defence or move the team up for a set piece. Arguably we had the benefit of that stop-start reffing last week once we weathered Sunderland’s opening flurry — even if it meant a nervy 13 minutes added on at the end.

On the plus side, I suppose at least Burns is getting those free kicks this season. Last year there were times when he was virtually thrown into the stands and didn't get anything.

There was one where Stephens didn’t bother going with Burns and just shoved him in the face to stop him running past him. Ref wasn’t going to give it but the assistant flagged.

That was the third similar foul on Burns by Stephens in the space of 5 minutes. When he gets away with it he’s going to keep doing it. Absolutely ridiculous refereeing.

At one point in the first half, after Wes had been cynically taken out AGAIN, the camera caught McKenna scribbling something on his notepad.

I hope he wrote down every time Wes was brought down with no card shown and handed it to the ref after the match

JD’s card was an absolute joke. They were taking longer for throw in’s than he was.

Yeah I thought he managed the physicality of the game well in the first half especially, only giving fouls for obvious stuff like someone getting held back or blatantly shoved to the floor. I know it's the way of football fan behaviour and we'd all be the same if it was our team but was quite amusing to hear the Stoke fans giving the ref stick after giving us free kicks for a particularly thuggish challenges, of which there were plenty from them.

Agree with the general theme of the thread that it seemed like he left his cards in the dressing room at HT. There were 3 clear yellow-worthy challenges in about 5 mins in the 2nd half, all from one of our players getting round theirs on the break and being hauled down which he gave no booking for. The time wasting bookings were also silly, the change in attitude to time wasting in that regard is well intended but it's going to get stupid if it carries on like it has.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
