Before 2016 the tests were done annually, but the government has now opted not to deliver a complete update until 2025." Agreed. Can’t see it happening though. The self-interest is too pervasive across politics, business and organisations that could shine more of a light on the corruption, such as the media. The rewards are too great to override morals, at least for the majority.

The self-interest extends deeply into the bulk of the electorate too, which is the real problem. Assuming that democracy still functions, the ordinary voter needs to accept that the temptation of unprincipled accumulation of wealth and luxury has a hideous cumulative effect on the environment, and is a ticking time-bomb which our children will somehow have to try to defuse. It's up to US. We need to be big enough to say enough is enough, reset our values and dismantle the cancerous growth-focussed economic system and cut out the tumours of greedy corporations that drive it ON OUR BEHALF.

It's more wilful than that. You can't persuade people to give up their comforts and pleasures if they have no sense of societal cohesion or duty. If you have the fixed belief that the poor are ripping off the system on your tax bill, then you will have no empathy or desire to help them. If patriotism extends to defending the indefensible and stopping foreigners ripping you off (spot the trend here), but not to actually building up the economy, infrastructure, etc., then you won't want to contribute. It's all so bloody inward-looking. "What's in it for me?", "Why should I have to pay for that?", never "How can we make things better?". Unfortunately, disillusionment with a warped, corrupt and scandal-ridden system will only tend to push people away from corporate endeavour and into individual, issue-focussed, more isolated groups. Political tribalism doesn't help in that, either.

Because there are defo no problems with water pollution in the promised land. The Sarno, known as Sarnus to the Romans, is a stream that passes through Pompeii to the south of the Italian city of Naples.[3] It is considered the most polluted river in Europe.[4] It flows about 24 kilometres (15 mi) from the base of Mt. Sarno to the Bay of Naples collecting water from the Solofrana and Cavaiola tributaries during the course of its flow. It is still partially used for irrigation, as well as the transportation of goods and fishing. It is part of the Sarno river basin, which covers about 715 square kilometres (276 sq mi).[2][5] The Sarno is one the most polluted rivers in Europe, due to agricultural waste and insufficiently treated industrial waste water.[6][2] There are about 500 small industrial units in the area which still emit pollution. Water treatment plants have been installed, however, they do not work to full capacity. The mouth of the river continues to make bathing in the sea impossible, despite numerous protests. And there are far more egregious examples in the lightly regulated US which is we’re we are heading. If you believe pollution will improve after leaving the EU I think you’re going to be disappointed mate.

Yeah but who made that claim....guess this must be what a straw man is. Good luck waiting for the EU to save us and the planet from the current economic model though, it's going to be a long wait. Edit...on the plus side though, as and when Starmer doesn’t fix the issue at least you and he can say it was just because we aren't in the EU. [Post edited 19 Aug 2023 11:08]

He's making a fair point, and we should be able to put up our hands over this. Just before we left the EU, the European Commission were in the process of taking action against the UK for allowing water companies to discharge sewage into the natural environment.

The "What's in it for me?", "Why should I have to pay for that?" brigade will soon realise, as a law and order-based society starts to break down that the selfish attitude will be their own downfall. A few hundred grand in the bank and a Range Rover won't protect you from looting and pillaging of a disenfranchised and climate change-affected hungry mob. Selfishness is short-sighted and self-defeating.
