She has put her hand across the player in order to foul her but insufficient to actually foul. I can see why it has been given but it feels a tad harsh. As said above a clear and obvious error should be quicker to correct. It seems as if the referee took some convincing. In the end it didn't matter anyway. |  |

Not only did it take forever, but the process seemed to include the ref chatting it through with the VAR people. Perhaps they'll eventually let them share a pint while they analyse how the game has gone up to that point.
As is regularly said on here "it's all about opinions" - but surely it's not for the officials to chew it over at such length thereby blowing any credible cover that it's about a "clear and obvious error". | |

Once I'd seen the replay, it looked a clear pen under the current laws & I don't know why the VAR official didn't simply tell the ref to change her decision. Maybe they were reluctant to make a VAR call that was likely to decide a World Cup Final (although, as it happened, it didn't). Ref bottled a few decisions e.g. not sending off a Spaniard by giving her a clear second yellow for kicking the ball away; also not booking Bronze for her endless delaying of the penalty kick, but maybe refs are all reluctant to make big decisions in big games. |  |
