The lad has just turned 22, played almost 50 games – most of those starts – in the Prem, several more in the Europa, and has something big to prove with a manager he has known for years. Presumably he and McKenna feel they can get him back to his best. It's a really high-calibre arrival if we do it. Only question mark really is the lack of football over the past year but by all accounts he's had a good pre-season. I guess there's another over where he is actually used ... I can see the argument for right wing-back that a few have raised ... but it's a really big boost to the depth of quality available to us in two or three different positions, we are going to have to be so good defensively this year if current form is to be maintained. |  |

It's a high quality addition, and we now have 3 full backs capable of playing how McKenna wants us to - that's going to be so important because as much as JD (and Leigh) are solid and dependable back ups, our full backs are incredibly important to how we play as a team and without the extra quality there it forces us to rejig our game plan - the fact McK does this so well that fans don't notice is testament to him but it really hampers us offensively |  |

Going to be really interesting to see how he utilises Williams and evolves our system. I saw some Utd analysis from their US tour which showed Williams operating in the midfield role and higher whilst in possession. Some really good insights from Neville and Carragher on Monday Night Football this week on how the fullback role has evolved and gone from being a 'dumb' role to one that's key to both offensive and defensive plays.
Looking at Williams highlights from his time at Norwich you can see he is very right footed (so playing both sides should't be an issue), mobile and athletic, seems the perfect addition for us. |  | | |
