If they hate it so much, maybe they should stick to the Cymru Premier, they could've been playing Penybont FC away today.

A relation from Walthamstow when she comes to see us in St Albans can't believe how many folk you pass give you a nod, smile or greeting. We're about 20 miles from Charing Cross.

The same cannot be said about Harpenden. The difference is very noticeable. We always say that they are grudgingly prepared to let St Albans people into their town, but if you come in from Luton you have to show your passport and visa.

It's interesting how things do vary, even in the South East. I find the people in customer-facing roles in the Dartford-Chatham corridor very friendly, in complete contrast to the area of West Kent I live in. I sense it's a hangover from the working class communities there that would have been very strong at one time.

Yes as someone who grew up in East Kent, the residents of Sevenoaks, Tunbridge Wells etc are a different breed altogether

Indeed, the residents of Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks even look down on those in Tonbridge, the town in the middle where I live. Indeed, those in my daughter's school in Tonbridge from outside the area called it "Scumsbridge", something perhaps ironic because three of the best schools in Kent in terms of exam results (Tonbridge School, Judd and Tonbridge Grammar School) are in Tonbridge.

It got stoked up when Blair gave devolution to Wales, Scotland and NI and totally ignored 83% of the UK (England) and we were supposed to remain British while the other three nations were encouraged to express their national identity while we paid for their 'parliaments' and extra layer of bureaucracy. Football wise it is time UEFA forced the Welsh clubs back into their own league. They have had one since 1992 and they are taking the places of English clubs looking to get into the EFL. They will refuse of course because of money, but a league of Wales with Swansea, Cardiff, Newport, Wrexham would be no worse than the Scottish league and would at least be patriotic rather than hypocritical which they are at present.

Supreme Jacob, excellent post as always. Though I am intrigued at what aspects of your proud English culture you feel you can't express?

You even get a little bit of stranger friendliness in Walthamstow sometimes. Or at least you do when there's the slightest of ins - had a very chummy football match for total strangers on Saturday for instance - lots of laughs.

Edit: there was even a bit of relaxed race banter thrown in actually: their team was all black - ours much more mixed - they won 3-2 with gentle taunts of how the black cockneys had beaten the white cockneys blah blah...

Harpenden ! I mean, it's hardly Chorleywood or Rickmansworth, is it ?

People in Harpenden consider most folk from Chorleywood and Rickmansworth to be plebs.
