If I remember rightly, ex-Town player Colin Harper, then a builder, came up with a way of opening them up to give them more atmosphere.

The one in the middle ? the Greene King box, as was 20 years ago at least, it slides down I think for the full crowd experience, but I believe also pipes crowd noise into the box if you want to keep the window shut when it's cold. It was the only one that did that. But I've not done a ground tour for years so they might have improved some more of them.

After all it only took them 2 months to fix a blown light in a stairwell in the south :)

Yes, I think that's the one he worked on.

Thanks for the replies, folks. Having seen some of them looking like they were open in footage of games last season, I’d wondered a) if I was imagining it and b) how recently it had been possible.

Had a chat with a steward about this at the Stoke game, who said two of them have slide around windows. I know one of those two have an older gentleman in it who I swear I recognise as a town legend of like the 60's era, but don't know for sure.

Some of the Cobbold Boxes have the option of an opening window. At one point it was a £2000+VAT option if you have the box for the season. Dont think its possible to fit it on all of them though

The definitive on this is that there were two boxes in the middle that were selected for a trial where the window would lift out of the way as it felt the box lacked atmosphere. These boxes were conceived when other clubs had incorporated similar enclosed boxes and not like the concourse style exec boxes we see today.

The club decided to not go forward with a complete roll out of removable windows due to issues with leaks and broken hinges etc.

He isn't an ex-player but is a mega fan, I think now into his 90s. Absolutely lovely family; his wife came too, but sadly passed away a few years ago. You may have seen Ray Crawford with him occasionally though.
