Police presence was a bit OTT though 11:04 - Dec 17 with 3311 viewsMeadowlark

All those road closures and diversion routes for home supporters.
As usual the police making a mountain out of a molehill and being seen to be doing "something" rather than actually doing anything useful.
I was asked which team I support before they'd let me down one road. What???
Suppose I didn't support anyone?

I know many will disagree and say that the massive police presence was necessary, but really they were promoting and maybe even encouraging dickhead behaviour on both sides of the their thin blue line.

And as I witnessed the escorted exodus up the road to the station, I noticed many budgie fans who were clearly and rightly embarrassed to be treated in such a way. Yes, there were those who were using the police protection to play to the crowd and act hard, but a lot of them just wanted to go home, or like me, go for a pint.

How did we allow ourselves to be treated like this?

It Was moronic how the Alf Ramsey had to walk all The way round, then got stopped while all the Norwich fans walked by, loads of town fans, mostly families standing there being shouted abuse at who just wanted to cross the road and go home. why didn’t they let the home fans clear out first.. it was like they set the day up to create trouble.

Police can't win. Trust the public to behave, which we've seen time and time again they don't, and they'd rightly be hammered for it.

As usual in all walks of life, it's the odd few who screw it up for the vast majority.

There were no more away people than Leeds brought and others have although accept more came by train than for others. Wonder if they'd do similar to yesterday for the many cockney teams should we get promoted as most of them would train it. As for inconveniencing home fans, notice on their vehicles it says Norfolk first before Suffolk.

Should have kept theirs in the ground until Town fans had cleared the area. Back in the years that I regularly went away we were often kept in grounds until the home had gone. But yesterday was clearly a case of putting Norfolk first.

Despite what had been published about directions for home fans I thought I’d try my normal route from Cardinal Park direction to the SAR, rather than have to walk all around the ground. Got to Princes St that I thought might be an issue to cross but just asked a couple os coppers stationed there if it was ok to cross and they just said go ahead. Leaving the ground wasn’t an issue as when I got back to Princes St the police had formed a barrier prior to the junction to form up the Norwich supporters so crossing wasn’t a problem.

Bit of a silly and small thing to whine about isn't it?

Very silly to say commenting about unusual policing is whining.

The bit that makes me laugh is how a police presence suddenly makes some of the youth get brave (on both sides)

So yesterday I walked down from the station. Plenty of budgies, plenty of town fans, no trouble, no sniff of trouble - pretty much everyone aware that they don't really know who or what is around them so best keep yer head down, yer gob shut and just make yer way to where ever you are heading.

There were a handful of coppers, not the tooled up ones, just ordinary coppers on hand should it need their intervention.

Get to the bit where the road was split - town fans round to the left, budgies straight on with coppers doing their bit to ensure we go where we are supposed to.

Round the bend and then, behind the Churchmans is a line of proper tooled up coppers keeping two sets of gobby youth apart who were all giving it large. Well if they wanted a punch up they could literally have walked 2 minutes back towards the station and had one.

The policing created the flashpoint and emboldened the youth who could now get all gobby without the prospect of getting lumped. Funnily enough when on the bridge no one had the same bravado...

Just an observation - how brave so many people become when there's no genuine prospect of a fight. And how the policing can embolden some individuals who otherwise wouldn't say boo to a goose.

Quite amusing tbh

Exactly. Football fans, including out own, have been shown to have an element that doesn't behave themselves. And any abuse or violent behaviour is completely down to individuals. It doesn't matter if there are 1000 tooled up coppers or one Plod. The behaviour of any fan is completely their responsibility. The protection of the public the police responsibility. They did what they decided was correct. Shame the abusive element didn't do what was correct for them.

It’s not the police.

The road closures were a result of the planned marches. Marches encouraged by the club and the council. The police were requested to close the roads on behalf of the council. On any other match day it’s a private traffic management company that deals with road closures and you can take it from me that the police would much rather that be the case. It’s also not the police that decide which games to have a presence at, it’s a request from the club and you can also take it from me that many of those officers would have preferred not to have their leave cancelled to police it, and many more would have otherwise been watching the game themselves.

I never understand why people have a pop at the police and the measures they take. It's a classic example of talking (and complaining) about someone most people have no idea about.

Yep, there was loads of Yellow and Blue fans on the trains all mingling, chatting away.

The Police made it feel like a match between Boca and River Plate

Precisely.
Remember the Sheff W away game and a load of people on here complaining about that video showing Ipswich fans being attacked by some Wednesday fans - remember the main complaint 'where the feck were the police?'. I think a few TWTDers even complained 'there was only one fecking copper'.

Police can never win.

I genuinely think there would be zero trouble with a police presence of about 10.
