We still don't really know a lot of the circumstances around Cook joining us - was he the new owner's choice, and they forced Evans' hand? Seemed a weird time to make a change if not.

I think a lot of the reason Cook was able to leave us in a better position than when he joined was due to him being back over the summer. I couldn't tell you the last manager prior to that who had been backed in a summer? And not to discredit the bloke, but we have no idea how much of the recruitment was his or influenced by someone above him.

you can neer say for sure, but if the player is effusive in their praise for their previous work with the manager, it's likely that the manager had a heavy hand in choosing them and persuading them aboard.

similarly if they don't fit the manager's template and fit more into the stated aims of the board (eg harper/edwards), it's probable that the purchase was influenced by someone above him

I reckon Warnock might go back there for the rest of the season, could do a lot worse, especially as they're in a bit of a relegation scrap.

How there is ever any debate about Lambert being our worst ever manager completely mystifies me. Took us down with a squad capable of staying up, did nothing at all in League One except promote himself and agitate for a longer contract which he amazingly managed to do. The fact he's an ex-budgie is just the cherry on the cake. Terrible, terrible manager (as many Stoke, Villa and Wolves fans seem to concur with).

"Took us down with a squad capable of staying up."

There's the first problem with your argument right there. What evidence is there we had a squad capable of staying up? We were well adrift at the bottom when he turned up!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Definitely not a vibe thing. He had the best squad, was facing worse opposition and still struggled just as bad as the rest of em.

Couldn't organise us and started blaming players he'd literally just signed.

The rebuild was happening whoever was in charge, he was here at the right time.

This “blaming players” thing is such a load of dross that gets spouted on here so often and has been said of a few managers, like Keane too. If players aren’t doing what’s required they can either be outed publicly or told as much behind close doors. Either way, so what, they’re professionals being paid a lot of money to fulfil a brief. If the brief is wrong, that’s another story but if they’re not executing what they’re told, they need their comeuppance.

So many folk on here use this as a stick to beat managers with. Man up, they’re bigs lads who can and should be able to take criticism, not that I can ever remember reading any specific players being outed under Cook.

New owners had no involvement in his appointment, was purely down to ME.

Whilst that seems accurate, didn't Mike O'Leary say something along the lines of Cook having been at the top of their list too? I would like to think that was simply backing the man in place or that their interview process would have altered their impression had they been appointing.

Aren't Villa doing well now ? And Wolves are not so shabby. So recently I have been wondering if the appointment of Lambert at those two clubs was part of an executive plan to try and find out exactly what was wrong behind the scenes and try to start a process to put things right, except that Lambert was not a big enough personality to win over the dressing room. And Cook was too big a personality for us. Clubs with an excellent history but in seemingly terminal decline need major surgery and maybe from a range of specialists (Keane - bombastic tell it like it is doctor, Jewell - sympathetic bedside manner to help the patient get over too much reality, McCarthy - steady treatment to prevent decline, Lambert - new diagnosis when patient starts to go downhill again, Hurst - hospital running low on funds and has to employ newly qualified, Cook - surgeon who also does barbering has to take drastic measures, McKenna - hospital successfully bids for extra budget and employs physician with all the latest knowhow and equipment.)

So how come Lambert did well at Nodge ? Because they are not a club with a wealth of history like wot Town, Villa and Wolves are...

Lambert built a team and a way of playing around a lumbering centre forward who was able to 90% of the refereeing decisions go in his favour. He then went into his true calling of pro wrestling. He couldn't recreate that anywhere else.
