Wednesday I reckon (10th)

No, Frimmers has a point here.

We failed to get the striker we wanted in for the second Summer in a row and it's likely to prove costly to the season unless we do something about it very soon.

Indeed and the Hirst injury has highlighted this. Luckily for us it has happened at the best possible time so hopefully we can act swiftly.

But it was far from an irresponsible mess and it will, like last season, be absolutely rectified.

We are not a joke of a club any longer, however people try to frame it. We'll get the right people in and we will finish top 5, although probably won't be promoted given the weight of the squads we are competing with and there's no shame in that, although I can see McKenna taking a Premier League job if we do fail to progress this season as the offers will start becoming too good to turn down at his age.

I don't see it as a flounce.

Yes the window has just opened.

But we went into the season with only Hirst as the right choice of striker for this league with no backup...

If we go into week 3 of the Jan window with no striker. You then have to ask what ashton has been doing for the past 8 months.

Is the answer working within a budget and attempting not to splurge the money we have on the wrong players? We also have back up, just not top end of the league, promotion chasing back up, which is a circumstance not many could have predicted. So all in all another very dim and wet post from Frimley.

I’m disappointed that we’re heading into Sunderland with Jackson and Ladapo.

There I’ve said it!

I’m not remotely annoyed at the club about it. They’re obviously trying to bring in better than what we’ve got. Just disappointed that we don’t have any top end championship strikers and I hope they can prove me wrong!

Same…
It’s been known we need a striker since the summer.

And let’s be honest, it’s not even like either of the 2 options will surprise us with a top end performance. They’ll be below average and we’ll suffer for it in the final 1/3 (even more so if Broadhead has another poor game)

I wouldn't class the backup championship quality in any sense, so many did predict an injury to Hirst leaves us in a bit of a mess, thankfully when it did happen it's just as the window opened.

End of day though theres plenty of time left so it's no drama, but based on the OP alone, I stand by my original reply in that it would be a suprise if we haven't got anyone though the door soon.

a niche perspective

…trying to get our main target (whether it’s Stansfield or not), fail and end up signing another young winger on loan and Jonson Clarke-Harris.

I think we'll end up with one striker on loan (whoever that might be), then we'll see Jackson and Broadhead used up top as options (McKenna also referenced Chaplin and Burns last weekend but I think they're less likely), and hope we get Hirst back from injury in time for the run in in April.

Do I think that will be enough to secure top 2? Not IMO personally.

Yeah the way Saints have come up behind us, Hirsts injury, the 10 point gap going in the blink of an eye… I’ve kind of accepted that top 2 (barring a couple of massive striker signings) probably isn’t going to happen… but I’d have been over the moon at a playoff finish, and with the first half of season being so impressive I’m certain not depressed if that were the outcomes.

We can all see that an upgrade in that area was desirable in the summer and absolutely necessary now and as soon as possible, but we live in the real world and they were both viable back up options at the start of the season. The main issue I have with your posts and I assume others do to is the consistent undercurrent of negativity.

TBH, I've always thought we lacked the squad depth to finish in the top two. It's possible still but certainly not probably.

Injuries to Hirst and Davis have compounded that, with Hirst playing and without our fullback issues then we could easily have won the last two games. As it was, we didn't have enough in either game for slightly different reasons.

I don't think losing the 10 point cushion is all that relevant, there's a degree of natural variation across the season and our early season form was exceptional.

Does that not indicate to you the difficulty of the task, considering our transfer success elsewhere, rather than give you ammunition for a moan?

Yes, it's difficult but that's two summer's in a row where we've failed to get a striker in that we wanted. Last season we got through that because Ladapo was largely good enough but still stumbled at this point last year.

This season, we've been very reliant on Hirst and have no other player who can play the role he does, it's such a big drop off to the alternatives that we've played Hirst more than we wanted too.

Our transfer record under Ashton remains far more mixed than people are willing to allow.

I honestly fail to see a moan in what I’ve written, sorry you’ve taken it that way.

But as Steve mentions above… 2 summers we’ve failed to bring in our main targets, so if people were to grumble a bit, it’s not totally unjustified.

Hopefully we get our man/men this time

More of a general point than you specifically re the moan.

People seem to be forgetting that Hirst was a summer signing also.
