If the budgies don't make it to the prem this season, I'd like to see us stay completely away from him. Championship Scott Fraser, his set piece delivery must be incredible, because in open play, he's been bang average every time I've seen him. Sainz and Rowe could possibly do a job though.

Agree with that. Downes was signed to replace Mark Noble, a player who those old enough will remember being on loan here. A damn good player. Noble did everything that Downes does and a lot more besides. Stayed fitter too. FD failed to meet expectations and the door was shown.

The idea that we go for a player who might help us survive in the PL, as has been suggested, doesn’t sit right with me. Go for somebody with more potential is my opinion. I also don’t hold with the ‘one of our own’ aspect. He isn’t. He couldn’t get away fast enough. I don’t blame him given the state of the club at the time, but I still wasn’t impressed with his attitude (from afar so possibly harsh).

As far as I’m concerned, that ship has sailed. As with Andre D I wish him well, but let’s move on and look for the kind of player you suggest.

Absolutely baffles me how someone can say this about 25 year old Flynn Downes, after watching McKenna turn Sam Morsy from a fringe Championship/L1 combative midfielder into one of the best midfielders in the Championship - taking balls off the keeper/defenders in a really sophisticated system.

Southampton fans love him and think he's their best player by a mile. The with and without Downes results comparisons bear that out for them this season as well. He barely got a chance at West Ham. But it's hardly surprising he didn't play ahead of Declan Rice who is the best English player in a generation in that position!

He had his chance at his beloved West Ham. He’s now on loan to a Championship club. Signed for £12m on a five year contract with an additional year option in 2022, so they clearly rated him after a good season at Swansea.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but memory tells me Moyes wasn’t keen what he saw (maybe injuries too), hence opportunities being limited. If he’d been bought as a player to develop, he’d have been on loan last season, not this.

It really is about opinion. Maybe his level is top Championship/relegation level PL? Don’t know. I didn’t notice him at PR particularly, but 4th place Southampton fans like him. My view may well be wrong. It usually is but it’s still move on.

He's one of, if not the best player we saw up against Morsy at PR this season in the league. Gave him a right game for the first 75 mins or so before Morsy got on the top towards the end. Stood out far more than Adam Wharton who got an £18m move to Palace and is now getting rave reviews. I think a lot of Town fans views of Downes are clouded by the way it perhaps ended here. Seen loads that would be happy with Sheaf (who is a good player) but Downes is better is virtually every respect and a year younger.

Think people need to forget about Downes... He doesn't like us, as demonstrated by his comments after the game against Southampton at home and the fact he got booed.. he also jumped ship, pretty easily..

What did he say after the Southampton game?

Honestly, nothing that controversial.

He left a very different club, I don't think anyone can blame him for being a bit sour.

I'd still have him back here.

Cheers.

Think he might be too injury prone for us to spend a chunk of money on?

Maybe, but I thought the same thing about Luongo and that turned out alright.

Guess it depends on what the injuries are / were.

Good comparison, sign him up.

Proper exciting to see who we bring in, there's 6/7 I'd like from the Championship.

I’d be going with cheeky bids for Somerville and Rodon. Not sure I’d be fussed about any of the Norwich lot.

I can't see Rodon getting any game time at Spurs, and may be one they look to move on. At 26, he's

I'm not sure if Leeds have an option on the loan though.
