England Euro 2024 squad 11:15 - May 21 with 2753 views | pointofblue | Released at 2pm today. Sounds like Henderson won’t be in it, according to the Athletic, which will be a pleasant surprise if true. [Post edited 21 May 2024 11:15]

England Euro 2024 squad on 11:56 - May 21 with 2617 views | ford6600 | Hopefully no Rashford, Henderson, but GS will no doubt stick to many of his favourites despite lack of form or past it and we will have another underwhelming tournament. His win percentage is 60% or so but that includes the bloated group stages against no hopers. In tournament games only 40% or so success. Pity Keiran couldn't take on England just for the summer!

BBC have just said Rashford is out too. Trafford is the surprise for me. He was awful for Burnley and promptly dropped. Would have thought Butland deserved a chance ahead of him. And, with Henderson in the squad too, suggests one of Pope or Ramsdale misses out and I’d take both over Trafford.

By the sounds of it Trippier is going to be first choice LB, with Gomez in reserve, whilst they test the fitness of Shaw and Chilwell. Have to wonder why Toney is preferred to Solanke.

I agree about Trafford - he's looked like a bad keeper all season, it appears Southgate isn't calling up players out of form, but has called up youngsters who've been through the system instead. Not sure about Curtis Jones either, to me he's looked like an average player who occasionally plays in a good team, reminds me of Hodgson calling up and playing Martin Kelly and Jon Flanagan...

I like the way you insist he’ll stick to his favourites despite the player most would put front and centre of that argument (Henderson) being reportedly omitted, whilst the likes of Quansah and Wharton appear to be included Your second part is made up nonsense. We’ve won 6/9 major tournament knockout games under Southgate, 6/10 if you include the 2018 WC 3rd place playoffs, so a similar rate to the group stage (6/9). It’s almost as if major international tournaments are very hard to win and swing on fine margins - if final and semi-final efforts from 3 attempts is underwhelming god knows what term you’d use for the ones before Southgate EDIT: and Rashford reportedly out too. But yeah, favourites [Post edited 21 May 2024 12:56]

Grealish had apparently made the 30, so that’s 14 players known. Then there’s the obvious ones - Pickford, Walker, Trippier, Gomez, Stones, Maguire, Rice, Bellingham, Saka, Foden, Kane. Means five places remaining. Could be another keeper in Ramsdale or Pope, I think Alexander-Arnold and Chilwell will make the 30. Perhaps another striker or two - Watkins? Solanke? Anyone obvious I’ve missed?

Surely he will be in the squad.

Dean Henderson is in the squad, not Jordan Henderson. Apologies, should have put his first name initial. I forgot Gordon in my last post - sounds like he’s made it too.

That defence is a bit depressing! Dunk who cost England goals last match, Gomez who's hardly played since Robertson came back for Liverpool, Branthwaite and Quansah both promising youngsters but still make mistakes, Trippier, Shaw and Guehi recovering from long term injuries Maguire and Stones have been mainly backup players for their clubs and Konsa has been playing out of position all season!

Feels like this England squad is top heavy - a lot of attacking options but very little in defence. When people are questioning Eric Dier’s absence…

Forgot about him, he should really be at the top of the list for defenders! I think with Southgate once he's ruled a player out then that's pretty much it for them. I would argue that Butland should have been called up instead of Trafford, Dier ahead of most of the defenders, Ward-Prowse or Barkley should be there ahead of Jones, and although I rate Toney as a player he hasn't scored since the middle of Feb if picking/dropping players on form surely Solanke should be ahead of him

I presume Trafford is just there for experience, possibly the same with Jones. In fairness, Ward-Prowse’s form nosedived in the second half of the season and Barkley’s had his first decent season in about a decade. After the friendlies, the squad will be cut to 26. I imagine it will look something like - Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal). Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City). Cut: Trafford, Shaw, Quansah, Jones, Wharton, Maddison, Toney Quansah may be preferred to Branthwaite and Shaw will be included if he makes a miraculous recovery. I’m split between Eze and Maddison - have gone with Eze on recent form. Of course, if one of the ‘cut’ players stakes a claim in a friendly then things could change. ETA - ruddy auto-correct. Season, not series. [Post edited 21 May 2024 16:32]

Yeah I think a lot of these are perhaps just players for the future and know they'll be cut. I would keep all 3 strikers and cut Konsa too I would cut Grealish of the attacking midfielders as he just hasn't played enough and all the others are on form. I would have included Mitchell in this squad ahead of 1 of the 7 centre backs! Harvey Elliott I can understand more as he's an attacking midfielder where we have a lot of players in form

I guess it’s a case of which position/sccan be covered by each player. Ignoring those I think will be cut, it looks like this: GK: Henderson, Pickford, Ramsdale RB: Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Konsa, Stones, Trippier, Walker LB: Gomez, Trippier CB: Branthwaite, Dunk, Gomez, Guehi, Konsa, Maguire CM: Alexander-Arnold, Bellingham, Gallagher, Mainoo, Rice, Stones RW: Bowen, Eze, Foden, Gordon, Palmer, Saka, Watkins AM: Bellingham, Bowen, Eze, Foden, Grealish, Kane, Palmer LW: Eze, Foden, Grealish, Gordon, Saka, Watkins ST: Bowen, Gordon, Kane, Palmer, Watkins With Stones ability to play in the midfield, Konsa being in the squad gives cover at centre back. Plus we have options beyond Kane and Watkins should they be needed up top - albeit it’d be an emergency. I think that will be behind Southgate’s thinking.
