I am stuck on a train at Stoke-on-Trent station.

Stoke is the worst dump of all big English towns/cities - discuss

It's certainly up there. I would add Keighley, Rochdale, Salford, Burnley, Blackpool, Warrington, Runcorn, Wolverhampton, Crewe. All completely void of any features (except Rochdale town hall).

The walk to the ground by the canal is a long one and even more miserable in the dark and wet.

Salford? There's loads of bits of Salford - the deprived parts are still grim but the majority of it is fine to very nice. Lots of greenery too.

Yes, Alan A’Court was there when I was (1993-96), he was the manager of the Sports Hall and I knew him a bit as I played for the football team. He was a genuinely nice guy, and had a decent career for Liverpool in the 1960s.

I was there just after it converted from a Poly to a Uni and had loads of money spent on it.
In my first term alone (Autumn 1993), they built brand new lecture theatres and classrooms at sleek Road (almost opposite the Terrace), and trebled the size of the Leek Road Union.

The halls had only been a couple of years before - it was a great time to be there, I loved it.

Getting served at the union bar was always a problem on Wednesday and Saturday nights in particular, so I'm quite jealous to learn that they trebled its size shortly after I left!

Did you know that Alan played for England at the 58 World Cup? He deputised for Tom Finney, who had to miss out through injury. He played against Brazil, Northern Ireland and, I think, also the embarrassing loss to the USA. In fact, he scored against Northern Ireland. I also played for the Poly football team and I remember one Saturday morning all 3 teams were waiting in the sports hall foyer for the coach to take us to an away game. We were watching Football Focus on Alan's 12" black and white portable TV and they had a feature on past England v NI matches (in advance of a forthcoming world cup qualifier). Suddenly they showed Alan's goal. Everyone cheered and went crazy. I remember Alan's face went bright red with a smile from ear to ear. He was a very modest bloke, as you will recall, but I'm sure that made his day!

He knew I supported Ipswich of course and would frequently talk about Ray Crawford, Ted Phillips and Jimmy Leadbetter.

Years later, when I learned that he had passed away, I bought his autobiography. It was a great read.

Like you, I thoroughly enjoyed the Stoke experience.

My young Son and I went to Stoke away on New Year's Day this year.

There is normally a bus that runs from the station to the ground, but this wasn't running on this day.

We spoke to a local police officer, who told us it's a 10-15 minute walk mostly alongside the canal and pointed us in the right direction.

We found the canal and walked and walked. We passed some people who were fishing and drinking, and there was a distinct aroma of drugs in the air.

We were wearing colours, and they gave us some clog, so we wished them well and carried on our journey. We met upon more people, and again the smell of drugs was prominent.

We must have walked for around 40 minutes before we got to the ground - never again...if the bus is not in service, it will be a cab for me

The bus was running to be fair but you had to cross over that main road and catch it at the corner around from Wearherspoons. A friendly local helped me out. The Minister is OK (who would have known it has a Minster), but Stoke is an absolute pit. The town is bookies, charity shops, rough pubs and a Tesco. But the other towns making g up Stoke on Trent are meant to be better. The litter in Stoke was unbelievable but it was new year's day. On par with Crewe for the ultimate sh.t hole I've had to visit following football.
I liked Rochdale. Bonfire night game was fun and Gracie Fields is a heroine of mine.
