One very interesting stat given yesterday. 08:26 - May 26 with 1892 viewsMK1

Gary Lineker said that Man Utd have had an academy player in their starting X1 in every match since 1934. That is a hell of a thing in these days of buying success.
(I say interesting, it was to me)

Poll: New hobby suggestions for NeedhamChris.

More significant is the fact both goals today were scored by teenagers.

Something I’m sure KMc would relish, unfortunately the academy is our Achilles heel and it may just be the tipping point should he be offered the job at Old Trafford..

Well, they do it at the same time as trying to buy success.

Poll: Would Lambert have acheived better results than Cook if given the same resources

Such a shame we dont have a Downes Mk2 to challenge Luongo, or a Darren Bent ready to break through. Not sure it would have made a huge difference in him choosing to stay.

I does look like we're finally addressing it.

That's only more significant on the day. Definitely not more significant than the OP stat. That tells you just how consistent they are at developing players and giving a pathway. Should be mandatory really. Good for the game.

It’s match day squads rather than starting 11 but still. They also have the highest net spend over the last 10 years.

Poll: Your favourite thing about THAT goal?

Seriously?! You think that Man U academy performance is the “tipping point” should he be offered a chance to manage Man U? That’s some monster levels of delusion. If he was offered the Man U job there is no “tipping point”

It is a remarkable stat but when you have Bobby Charlton who made his debut in 1956 and played his last game in 1973 and Ryan Giggs who made his debut in 1991 and played until 2013 that’s 39 years with just 2 players

Yes the match day squad distinction is an important one. In the period when the stat would be the most impressive if it were only starting 11, the size of the matchday squad has mushroomed in size. You could argue that the matchday squad is so huge these days that there should be a requirement for every side to have an academy player in there.

But yeah, these days anything that goes back to the 1930s I suppose is impressive. The fact that United have achieved it probably means that most others have not. Chelsea probably have 200 academy products in match day squads every weekend, but only 0 of them are in Chelsea's squad, as opposed to being out on loan somewhere...
