Indeed they are dangerous when protecting their young. As with humans, never get between a mother and her offspring.
We have three herds of cows in our village, one of them is pretty docile, especially the bull who just likes to eat, shag and lie around, the other two herds are a bunch of w@nkers and never to be trusted.
Cattle aren't just dangerous when protecting their young - they are at any age, stage, gender and status, whether young beef steers or elderly dairy cows.
*How to prevent being trampled* -
1. Let your dog off the lead & let it run away if its able-bodied - it's usually the main target/provocation.
2. Turn and face the cattle, shout, wave your arms & run or walk purposefully towards them - they'll be scared of you and back away (helps to also wave a stick). If you're a long way from the gate and they follow you, turn & repeat. If your dog is slow/elderly/infirm & too big to pick up, don't go into any field with cattle in.
