England players not fit enough to press 09:43 - Jun 22 with 1842 views | Guthrum | A shocking indictment, or just an excuse? I suspect the latter. After all, their opponents are playing in the same divisions and even teams as Southgate's squad. How come their fitness is adequate? If it comes down to injury, why take a player to a major tounament who is so crocked he can't run? However talented and experienced, that's going to render him pretty useless. Or, if they're considered absolutely indispensible and a situation needs managing, the bench needs to be used better. Maybe McKenna-style starters and finishers.

England players not fit enough to press on 10:03 - Jun 22 with 1753 views | MK1 | Pickford Walker-Stones-Guehi-Shaw Rice-Bellingham-Gallagher Saka-Kane-Gordon That's as good if not better than all but maybe France on paper. Just have to give them the right instructions and no reason why we can't win it. As for fitness, just an excuse.

England players not fit enough to press on 10:08 - Jun 22 with 1726 views | Mummy_Short_Arms | I don't think it can a be a fitness issue, for the most part. More a lack of understanding as to where and when to press. Hopefully Southgate is humble and brave enough to acknowledge tactical mistakes and make the necessary changes. I have feeling he will and it will click against Slovenia, and we'll actually go onto win this. Then again I have, very occasionally, been known to be wrong.
| Not a Mummy. Don't have short arms. |

You have just contradicted yourself there. Based on the season he has just had, Grealish doesn't deserve a spot in the squad. Gordon, Plamer, Eze, Bowen have all been far better this season. Taking Grealish would have fallen into your "old boys network" category.

England players not fit enough to press on 10:19 - Jun 22 with 1673 views | Pendejo | Maybe doing the bare minimum to proceed and throw off watching opponent scouts... hopefully. The matter Southgate has continually failed to address, over a number of tournaments, lack of balance. Remember; "you can be slow or fast, but you must get to the line"... "There's only one way to beat them, get round the back" I'd be critical of lack of balance in Sunday morning football, at international level it's totally unacceptable. When Ramsey won the world cup, wasn't he castigated for not necessarily picking the best XI but the best XI for the formation? Southgate has little or no left side plan, almost never has. Shaw injured, it happens, but surely there's 2 English left backs that were fit and in form? Southgate is 2nd most successful England manager, and it's madness but I feel he's underperformed. Are the players playing, playing in the positions they play, successfully, for their clubs? But got enough, I'm sure they are. Some passing also suspect... Again left side, passed wide not finding their man as he's coming inside rather than using width. Eat own words if lift trophy...

England players not fit enough to press on 10:24 - Jun 22 with 1640 views | _clive_baker_ | Think it’s more about the tactical set up to know their roles, familiarity with the triggers, when to press and when to not. Then it’s about personnel, it starts from the top and Kane has looked sluggish to me so far. Portugal were exactly the same with Ronaldo as a lone #9. In possession both have the killer instinct in the penalty area but they’ll come deep, suffocate the space in the middle and pull opposition defences up the pitch rather than play off the shoulder and make the runs in behind to properly stretch a defence, which is what’s needed to create the space for Fernandes, Bellingham & co. We looked better when Watkins came on and started doing that. I don’t think it’s about personnel for England though, we just don't appear to know what’s expected of us in the opening 2 games and Kane can’t help himself to keep dropping deep, whether that’s through instruction or off his own back. On top of that I don’t like the balance of Rice and TAA in the middle. Both good players but it’s not working.

I can't get my head around only bringing one left back with a poor injury record They seemed to press better after the subs but the lack of a decent press almost seems intentional, it looks like he'd rather they were keeping their shape than busting a gut to push up and close down I can't believe he's been in charge for so long and failed to progress this side, they should very much know their system by now

Walker and Kane basically admitted, independently, that the players weren't sure how to press within the system. That, coupled with Southgate admitting he was experimenting with centre midfield, is hardly a positive indictment of his leadership.

England players not fit enough to press on 10:51 - Jun 22 with 1520 views | ibbleobble | It’s as nonsensical as the comment about Kalvin-Phillips. If they’re not fit enough to play the way you want to play, then why pick them?
England players not fit enough to press on 10:54 - Jun 22 with 1504 views | Metal_Hacker | I don’t think it’s fitness at all It’s Southgate’s inability to play modern day football whilst trying to shoehorn players into the starting XI. He’s inept - simple

England players not fit enough to press on 11:38 - Jun 22 with 1390 views | ElephantintheRoom | If you are forced to run like a headless chicken week in week out perhaps its does catch up with you at the end of the season. Are other leagues/nations obsessed with pressing - which seems to be a German fad? The Spanish seem to be passing the opposition to death again and the Portuguese are doing what they do best. As are England in their own inimitable way
