but I didnt think the England game was all that bad, for a 0 - 0 draw*. There was much more energy than against the Danes, it was fairly end-to-end stuff at times, there were decent attempts on goal.

Granted, it's nothing like watching the current incarnation of Ipswich Town play. But we've been spoilt by some rather excellent football over the last couple of years.

Also, once again England have been favoured by the draw, which should see them well into the competition before facing anyone too ferocious.

* At the end of the group stage of a tournament, where we really only had to not lose.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I don't understand though, we faced teams in League One that parked the bus and we had players who could work out after a while how to break through, we have the best Player in the PL and the best player in La Liga (Europe) and we still struggle to break down teams.

They all look completely lost, including Southgate, the problem he has is he has moved away from when he first came in i.e playing form players in their positions, to having an embarrassment of riches and trying to play them all out of position just to accomodate them, You can see his confusion is affecting the performances on the pitch.

Foden is out of position.

I also think whilst Bellingham played very well at No10 for Real Madrid in the first half of the season (not so effective in the second half of the season), that doesnt mean he can perform there effectively for England.

Foden & Bellingham both want to operate in the same area of the pitch, like Gerrard & Lampard. Playing both of them means that a team becomes less than the sum of its parts. Southgate won't drop either of them, but he should & play Gordon wide on the left.

I think we'll find it easier and we'll be better in the knockouts assuming we face teams who are more adventurous than Slovenia. However, the last two games have reminded me of the Iceland match under Roy Hodgson, lots of possession around the box without having the guile to find a way through a massed defence.

Why did you have to mention that game 😂
I’m just about getting over that!

Agree to some extent. Thought the first half was much the same as the previous games but then I wasn’t expecting any better when his only change was bringing Gallagher in.

Certainly once Mainoo came on and then palmer, we looked to have more of a threat.

It just baffles me how most of the country can see that we needed a LB in this squad, we needed one of Mainoo or Wharton next to rice and we need a proper LW like Gordon, yet the man in charge can’t see it.

I’d like to see Mainoo & Rice with Palmer, Jude/Foden, Gordon as the 3 ahead of them for the next game but no doubt we’ll see the same unchanged team with perhaps Mainoo in for Gallagher.

I thought it was terrible to be fair , sorry Guthers but when you consider the below it wasn’t all that bad I guess -

No patterns of play
No left back
Players playing out of position
Striker seemingly unfit
New CB pairing
Champions League winner running in mud
Stubborn manager

What do you think you mean by patterns of play? or are you just using the buzz phrase on your "journey". There were definitely patterns of play, there just wasn't much thrust or vibrancy about them.

I agree.

Foden is the better No 10 though.

Bellingham wasn't a No10 at Dortmund, and has only really had half a season as an effective No10 at Madrid. I dont get the obsession with playing him there.

I think he's played there as GS doesn't feel a Rice / Bellingham would work as a pair.

Actually we struggled to do that until we signed Broadhead, Hirst et al in the January window. Perhaps that's what Southgate needs to do.

No, he's clearly not getting the best out of the players, whose confidence looks shot at the moment. Need a game against a lesser side like Georgia next where they play themselves back into form before taking on bigger guns.

the blindingly obvious thing as that, apart from the first 30 minutes against Serbia, England are playing at far too slow a tempo. As I think Roy Keane said at h/t last night, England were too comfortable in possession & hence were lazy on and off the ball. Playing at a better tempo, as with pressing, requires everyone to buy into it. Last night, part of the problem was that a draw wasn't a bad result for either team, so the Slovenians funnelled back into shape & England moved the ball slowly, getting nowhere. This is part of the problem with a 24 team finals, with 4 3rd place teams going through. It should be a different game against better, more ambitious opposition, but I have little faith n the dogmatic Southgate fixing the obvious flaws in his selections.

I agree, it's very easy for games to slow down if one team has possession and the other one is just sitting back in their box. Needs someone to inject more pace to the passing.

I would've thought Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia are lesser teams, Slovenia had a player who recently signed for Swindon, a population of 2.2m and the main sport is Skiing.

Ski Jumping is their top sport in world terms. They have had many world-class jumpers and fliers since their independence.
