Gray is much younger than Davis and has huge potential, can play a couple of positions but will likely end up being a top CM. £40m seems a bit nuts but I don't think Gray going for that means Davis is also worth that much. He’s good, but vastly overhyped from what I’ve seen.
Bellingham went for £25m at similar age, was a far bigger prospect.
Arda Guler went to Real for £20m and a top talent.
As I say, he’s really good, but he’s overhyped through Sky pundits & coverage this year, the Gray/Leeds connection has bought him a lot of coverage. |  | | |

A player is only worth what a club will pay. Leeds had a few clubs looking at Gray including L'pool and Spurs, obviously we don't know if any clubs have looked at Davis but so far we aren't aware of any. Which suggests clubs think Gray is a better prospect than Davis. |  | | |

As you per your point, Gray is 18 and Davis 24 so 6 years difference. In another 6 years Davis would be heading towards the end of his career Gray in his prime. Gray's future value is much higher than Davis which will certainly help with current values.
The point is (and I appreciate we don't know) based on rumours, L'pool, Spurs, Chelsea have been showing interest in Gray, as yet no club has shown interest in Davis. Brentford have gone in high because they're aware other clubs are interested. If none had shown their hand Brentford would probably be offering £20m with the aim of gradually increasing. But with others interested the danger is if they went in low they start a bidding war, so go in high and Leeds accept immediately. | | | |

I think the point I am getting at is that if a club was to enquire we would use that as a ball part figure even if he ain't worth that , looking at his stats he's not had many goals or assists so age is the main factor a bit like Wickham was potential and that is all | | | |

Leif could have snuck into the England squad at the last minute due to the circumstances. If he hadn't already gotten minutes by the second game, there would have been a clamour for him to start the last game, where he could have made a real impact.
None of that happened of course, but just getting a cap would add millions to his value & who knows what a couple of assists would have done. Maybe not £40m, but in today's market could easily get to £25m. | | | |

When Davis’ value was discussed a few months ago, before promotion, I thought ask for £30m and accept no less than £25m. Something like that. It was a bit tongue in cheek, but with the news re Gray, maybe that’s not so daft. Davis will be able to play PL and will do it well. Southgate could have done a lot worse than take him to Germany given he hasn’t got a left back. Doh. So I’ll stay with that original view on his value.
Gray looks an outstanding prospect to me. The figure for him is eye watering but I can see why. He’s going to be some player in a year or two’s time so on age, ability to play in various positions and potential I’d say he’s worth a lot more than Davis. |  | | |

From all accounts he doesn't want to leave, its the club pushing him out to fund a debt. Although if they have rejected maybe they aren't as desperate on the debt front as the news reports. Alternatively they could aware another club has also played their hand now and about to offer more money.
