Makes you realise just how significant a good manager like KM is, in setting and building pattnerns and shapes.
About 10 years ago, the FA became obsessed with playing through the phases/ thirds and insist on dogmatically coaching it everywhere. Great in principle, so long as its a starting point rather than a straitjacket.
For this team, Southgate appears to have used it as the latter. Passive. Pass about. Move into the middle. pass about. Fail to move to the front third, or get there and move backwards becuase nothing is on, and start again. So predictable and now outdated. [Post edited 30 Jun 2024 17:48]

Our players are brilliant.
Bellingham world class. Foden has had a brilliant season, Saka too. Kane has been banging them in all year.
Our manager though has set up in such a manner that they look lost, like they don't know each other and without a focus.
Pointing the finger at the players on this occasion seems to be absolutely not the right target of anyone's ire. |  |
