Cavendish day ? on 17:57 - Jul 3 with 1949 views | Perublue | Ahhhh .. today was Cav day I’m glad I made the effort to watch it live on tv from bed it’s the least I could do after all those kilometres he’d ridden. Fantastic that it’s finally been achieved after it looked like this time last year it was all over. How many more stages do you think he’ll bother with on this tour ? 1 to soak in the glory and pull out Friday ?

Bloomin' marvelous - Cav's a legend (he already was but more so now). I think he might stay in the tour for a while. Tomorrow (Thurs) is a flat stage. Friday is the individual time trial. So nothing to scare him there as he's not going for the GC. Sat and Sunday are hills but no mountains. Category 4 is the hardest. Rest day on Monday. Unless he crashes and gets injured I think he's there for next week.

why would he quit now ? whilst it would have been marvellous to have that goal to aim at to finish on the Champs Elysee one final time, even just to get that honorary lead out they do for special riders before its get serious, and the Nice TT isnt going to be quite the same feels. theres still stages he could win, and I think people forget he has for several years now ridden the mountain stages to a known pace to stay within the time limit, its nothing to panic about if he gets dropped from the lead groups, stage 1 was a combination of the heat and effort, not that he is somehow in bad shape, and they'd be unlikely to kick him out for it anyway. unless he gets sick, or crashes out, I think he'll continue as long as he can, because it gives all those sponsors whove paid for him to carry on, all the more exposure.

He is known to respect the tour and it's history, so would hope he'd stay for the duration.

absolutely agreed, but I very specifically didnt say "and he's never quit the tour...", because he did back in 2008, in theory to concentrate on the Olympics, but there were 3 very hard mountain stages ahead of him and he wasnt renowned as the greatest at getting up them even then, and again in 2016 with 3 more hard mountain stages and a mountain time trial, it was after that he started to use the ride to the time limit technique. but that was then, and he absolutely respects the tour and what it means, and Id also use that time when he was out of the time limit, told his teammates to leave him, but refused to step off the bike and get in the car to complete the stage, because one of his first coaches had always told him never to give up, and respect the race.

the finish is a time trial at Nice this year, because of the Paris Olympics.

He's been in the grupetto on many stages but he's going to complete the tour. The last 4 riders today were Cav and 3 of his team mates. Cav is 2nd Last in the GC and his team mate Ballerini has the Lanterne Rouge.
