Starmer's education 12:41 - Jul 5 with 3569 viewsDJR

Starmer joins a select group of three PMs who were educated at undergraduate level in England at a university other than Oxford or Cambridge.

The other two are Ramsay MacDonald who attended Birbeck and Neville Chamberlain who attended Mason College (now Birmingham University).

That to me is to be welcomed, especially speaking as someone who did law at Leeds immediately before Starmer attended.

Sir Robert Peel elected 1835, knighted 1800.
Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman elected 1906, knighted 1895.
Sir Anthony Eden elected 1955, knighted 1954.

I did check Sir Winston Churchill, because he wasn't elected as the wartime PM and therefore was first elected in 1951. But he was knighted in 1953 during his second reign. So not quite.

I believe this list is correct dating back to 1830. Not sure before then

Thanks I did know Churchill had been knighted after first serving during the war, but forgot about Eden.

But you & DJR decided not to go into politics after all? Still haven't had one who's a Town supporter ...

Gordon Brown too I think.

I was careful to say England. There have been three PMs educated at Glasgow and 3 at Edinburgh which are both ancient universities but not so "establishment" as Oxbridge.

Totally agree, he’s from a working class background unlike most politicians, and for me there’s appeal that he’s had a real job/career outside of politics. Those who have not cannot honestly claim to have faced the struggles of many working people.

I do hope he’s not one of those hypocrites who pushes class warfare, only to send their children to private school, as is the case for some in the party. As it stands I don’t agree with private education, and it’s telling that many of our own politicians don’t think the education system which they oversee is good enough for their own children.

Well his daughter is currenty in my daughter's class at the local state. Although might change now they're moving down the road...

Not a Mummy. Don't have short arms.

definitely no weighting. the universities have an access and participation agreement with OfFA which sets targets for admissions of various groups (care leavers, post codes etc, but not now state school). but they are targets not weightings applied to particular elements of the applicant assessment.

You sound well-informed so perhaps i was mis-informed. What you say about post codes on the overall assessment is maybe what i've misinterpreted.

That's where his dad sent him. He was a tool maker you know...

I suppose only time will tell if that is completely true, but I like to give him the benefit of the doubt seeing as it is his first day in the job.

Starmer's father was a toolmaker, in case you didn't know.

Indeed, and he produced a wonderful hammer that smashed the rotten self serving corrupt Tories out of power last night, whoever uses it as a put down upon him, I bet he's having the last laugh.!!
