Great North Run 2024... 20:40 - Jul 7 with 10273 views | NewcyBlue | Well, I've made a daft decision again. I'm on a superyacht, with no working treadmill. I'm currently at 94kgs and not my fittest. But when the MS Society emailed asking if I would like a place in the GNR that somebody had vacated, I said absolutely. My posts about the GNR 2018 are archived, in 2018 I wrote "This year will be 10 years since my Mother passed away. In 2008 I was training to be an officer in the Merchant Navy. I started that job as it gave me the opportunity to earn a lot of money, and the best possible chance I could have to provide decent care for her. She had Multiple Sclerosis. She died during my first week back at the Marine school. I spoke to her hours before she died. She was crying on the phone telling me she loved me. I told her not to worry, I had an overnight bus (megabus) booked from Newcastle on the Friday and I would see her Saturday morning. I had dinner with my flat mate, we watched some TV and did a bit of study. I woke up the next morning, had a shower, got ready and started walking in to the college. I phoned my Mum on the way. My Father answered. He and I hadn’t spoke for years, I didn’t even know he knew where my Mother and I lived. He said “I’m sorry son, she’s gone”. My world fell apart." To be honest, I've never really gotten over it. I've just gotten used to it https://ajbellgreatnorthrun2024.enthuse.com/pf/kenneth-magee Look after each other TWTD, I must admit I'm in bits writing this and thinking about it all again.

Great North Run 2024... on 18:21 - Sep 7 by NewcyBlue | Ah 2018, when I did that and the Great East Run the following week. Long time ago! Next year? Let’s see me survive this year first. If I’m ashore next year for it I’ll either be tempted to run it or I’ll be around on the route and throw some Haribo at you! |
Enjoy running and that mate

Great North Run 2024... on 18:05 - Sep 7 by NewcyBlue | Well that came quickly (you can do the That’s what she said joke) A years worth of work has gone into tomorrow. Not for me, certainly for our MarkTWTD. I plan on getting through tomorrow, it’s survival. I’m naive enough to start and stupid enough not to quit. If anyone else on here is running tomorrow please let us know. Tomorrow I’ll post up tracking information, where you’ll be able to watch continental drifts move quicker than I do! |
Yep - I'll be running it for the third consecutive year. Last year the Red Arrows did a fly past for me as I crossed the finishing line - alas they are in Canada this year. I'll look out for you, Newcy. I guess I'm looking for someone resembling Captain Birdseye with a parrot on his shoulder?

Great North Run 2024... on 19:58 - Sep 8 with 1435 views | NewcyBlue | I’m fairly tired. 1 training run took place, which was a 5km. Woefully unprepared. Woefully lacking conditioning. M I got a Great North Run PB. Not a half marathon PB though. The star of the show was our MarkTWTD who I am immensely proud of! He got a great time, and has put such hard work into this. We also had the privilege of meeting and lining up alongside jaseitfc2015, who has my utmost respect. He also ran for the MS Society, and he’s a thoroughly brilliant chap. Tomorrow I’ll bore you with the gory details, and heap yet more praise on MarkTWTD. Thank you everyone that donated and/or sent messages of support.

My Garmin was unhappy with my achievement on Sunday. Overreaching. Yes Garmin, I put you on for a run. Hence why you’ve been work twice this year. One of which was a 5k, and the other a 21k. It’s not overreaching, it’s stupidity, and thank you. A good couple of hours in the assembly area pre run were spent with MarkTWTD, Jaseitfc2015, and Matty (Mark’s personal trainer). Despite the glorious weather I felt somewhat apprehensive. I had a little voice that said “you’ve not trained you idiot”. There was another little voice that was full of excitement, that was MarkTWTD. The organisation of the event seemed much worse than when I last did it in 2018. It all seemed to work better when we all lined up on the central motorway. I can’t really remember what we spent those two hours chatting about as we slowly made our way towards the starting line. Once we started running, there was some confusion on my part, as we all checked our watches to confirm distance mine was off. We soon figured out that my watch was showing in miles for distance, and kilometres for pace. Which threw me somewhat. I think I stayed with Mark and Matty for the first couple of miles. Jaseitfc2015 had long shot off into the distance. I waved Mark and Matty on their merry way, and settled in for what I knew was going to be a slog. I felt like my calf was going to be a problem with cramp all afternoon, and hoped I could get a decent way before walking. Along the Felling Bypass around mile 5 I happened across a chap that was obviously struggling. I started to walk with him and broke out a pack of dextro energy tabs and gave him a handful and told him he was doing great. Around mile 7 I came across a couple of lasses running for the MS society too and gave them some Haribo. After that I just kept running and walking, running and walking. Seb and his Mum were waiting to cheer me on at the New Mill pub on the Johnner (John Reid Road) and the twins and their Mum were further up the road on the other side by Boldon Lane Shell petrol station. After that I knew that I was on for a GNR PB and that was terrific for me all things taken into account. On the approaches to the downhill section I met Greg who was from Plymouth and also running for the MS Society. I asked him if he wanted to run the last bit with me, we ran down the hill to the coast road, which took its toll on my knees, and then it was a run to the finish. I didn’t see him after turning on to the coast road, the approaches to the finish was fairly busy with people walking. That’s it, that’s half marathon number 5 for me. GNR number 4. Not bad for someone that hates running. Again, I cannot thank you all enough for your generosity whether that be in donations or kind words. I have consistently raised money for the MS Society because of my mother. I’m thinking of signing up next year, and would like to ask TWTD if you have a charity to suggest? Perhaps as a collective group we could do events throughout 2025?

Well done on getting it done and your GNR PB, a half is never easy on little training! I much preferred running GNR to the London marathon I understand why they changed the start during Covid but i dont understand why they've kept it in place now, I wouldn't want to be waiting 2 hours to start, the mass start worked well when I ran.

Well, the dust has settled. What an amazing day that was. The roller coaster of "will he or won't he" be there on the day even if he's not running it. So pleased to have had you, Ken, and Matty alongside me at the start! It helped keep my nerves at bay and yes, I was very nervous and apprehensive going into the weekend. So pleased you got your GNR PB and can't thank you enough for supporting me over the past 14 months or so as I embarked on this lifestyle reboot. Let's do it all over again next year. I've got my place - so Sunday 7th September 2025 I know what I'll be doing!!
