I’m not surprised Suella believes this stuff. I’m just surprised after the election defeat, she only knows one way to attract attention.

Using this sort of language for a complicated, difficult and emotive situation shows why we’ve had such incompetence and failure under these lot.

Here are some comments from some Tories.

Iain Dale: “What a disgusting speech. And she seriously thinks she has a chance of leading the Conservative Party? Not while I have a breath left in my body. Moderate Conservatives need to stand up and be counted. This will not stand.”

Lord Houchen, the Tees Mayor: “The MPs and the members that I speak to are not interested in the divisive right wing politics of Suella Braverman.

The fact that she continues to entertain Reform, and even I think in an interview the other day, didn't rule out joining Reform, shows just how out of step she is.

She, before the leadership contest has even started, has shot herself in the foot.”

Lord Spencer was similar in his comments on the News Agents last night

"And this is why I'm genuinely scared by the movement of politics in general ... but also Starmer and his management way of considering transpeople's lives and very existence."

i'm not clear what you're getting at here. what has starmer said that is negative in terms of transpeople's "lives and very existence"? i'm only aware of him re-iterating the proper equalities position that transpeople are entitled to the full protection of the law against discrimination, harassment and unfair treatment, but that there are also a small number of situations in which their biological sex is still relevant. as a lawyer starmer has, as far as i can see, only stated what equalities legislation and the gender recognition act actually says. how is that a challenge to the "very existence" of transpeople?

He has uturned from earlier support of trans rights, recently coming out in support of Duffield, has criticised Scotland's lowering of the GRC age threshold to 16, has constantly not acted on transphobia within the party (as well as islamaphobia etc).

Then the other week said that he'd love to have a chat to Rowling (something i don't think he is extending to all citizens, or even those with skin in her game) and said transwomen do not have the right to use female toilets even if they have a GRC.

I do not trust the man one bit.

in what way has he "uturned" from support for trans rights? he is very clear that transpeople are entitled to the full protection of the law against harassment, discrimination and unfair treatment. he is a human rights lawyer and he is vocal in promoting those rights.

he is also properly stating the exceptions in the equality act that mean that biological sex remains relevant in some limited situations. is that the problem?

i'm not aware of significant transphobia within the party - or are you just equating respect for sex based rights with transphobia?

I think starmer is trying to take the heat out of this debate - whereas claims that he is threatening the "very existence" of transpeople is doing the exact opposite.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

I don't think he's trying to take heat out. I think at first he was very pro trans rights because he needed to woo the party and the left of the party, then he has shifted towards the Tory position as he wanted to woo the Mail and Telegraph audiences.

He has created a political space where cabinet members are following suit, including Streeting stating to the Sun that he no longer believes that transwomen are women. Even the LGBT+ Labour group have been criticising Starmer, and I know former trans members who have left in large part because of this shift since 2022.

I can feel the mood shift culturally and politically. We see it in the hurricanes of big right wing statements by loons like Braverman, but also feel it in the constant breeze of people like Starmer and Streeting.

I am not really on TWTD to chat politics, and as mentioned in my first post here think this may be my first one discussing myself in politics in this way (I am gay, not trans) so will leave it here. But I have little time for Starmer - he has u-turned on so much i have no faith or trust in him. He is clearly not as dangerous as Braverman or Badenoch, but I still believe he is dangerous for LGBTQ people because he is allowing a constant flow and direction of travel of such phobias.

ok, it was fun chatting. but just to leave the discussion with a finale caveat. you still haven't explained what you mean by 'trans rights'. what are they and are they different from the rights defined in the equality act? do 'trans rights' go beyond the equality act? how do you feel about sex based rights (also defined by the equality act)? what's your view on balancing different rights when conflicts arise?

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
