I was thinking of the donation it seems you can't avoid making to the ITFC Foundation when buying a membership. Not that I begrudge them the money, and in fact I (inadvertently) made two 'donations'.

Saw explained elsewhere on the internet ...: A mandatory donation means, "We're not keeping your money. We're donating it to charity. But you have to give us money to donate if you want the thing that we're offering."

Could you not opt for £0? It rejected me when I put no figure in, but, rather than putting £0 in, I went for the suggested £2. Interestingly, they don't seem to use Gift Aid which makes me wonder if the Foundation is actually a charity in its strictest sense. EDIT: according to the website it is a charity, but maybe the arrangements they suggest don't actually make the donation a charitable donation for tax purposes, thus not attracting Gift Aid. FURTHER EDIT: it must be the fact that the charitable donation merges with the membership fee which stops it being a charitable donation for Gift Aid purposes, but you would think this could be restructured on the website to separate out the gift aid donation because otherwise the Foundation is missing out on a bit of extra money. You can avoid it. It’s not mandatory. Yes the box if pre-filled with £2 but it doesn’t add it to your basket, and if people are worried they can just change the £2 to £0 or leave it blank.

It didn't work when I left it blank.

Hmmm, it all seems a bit RyanAir add–ons that you have to scroll down a never ending list to prevent them bumping up the ticket. I know that the Foundation work is nothing like buying a cheap air fair but in a 'quality of mercy is not strained' manner I expect an ethical process of charity donation to be fully transparent and allowing the donor full discretion in the amount they give (see also Just Giving tacking on a seemingly unavoidable percentage for their administrative operation after you have made the donation.)

Always works for me when it’s blank, but like I say don’t even need to change it as doesn’t add the total to your basket, the donation but is completely separate, just below the box where the £2 is.

Never actually tried it before so just tried it, pressing the donate button adds it to your basket. Don’t press the donate button and it doesn’t add it.

A work colleague was a mad Rangers fan, and went to all their home games, even though he lived in London. He used Ryanair. At one point Ryanair found a wheeze whereby they could charge an add-on for paying by card so long as there was at least one credit or debit card that was exempt from the charge. Needless to say, the card was from obscure institution like the Salt Lake City Mormon Bank. Ever the Scotsman, Gordon tracked down and obtained the requisite card.
