The rise of ignorance and misinformation 12:24 - Aug 4 with 8774 views | FromReuserWithLove | In this country is really frightening and depressing. People quoting Enoch Powell and the likes as fact and the total freedom some feel to be openly racist is quite disturbing. As someone who is of mixed race, I'm genuinely quite worried about where we're heading as a country and as a world. I hope humanity can get a grip on social media and start educating again. Have you seen the news?!? I haven't seen this level of rioting, across multiple cities, since the Poll Tax in the 80s. |

That wasn't across as many cities as this. And incidentally, that was also fuelled by social media, so you've actually added to my point.

seriously, let's not get over-excited. more arrests will follow, prosecutions will start with eye-catching sentences, and at some point it will rain. we've been through cycles of riots many times before - they stop. when they stop is the time to draw conclusions - people (not you) now saying that it's the end of western civilisation and the country has gone to hell in a hand cart are very probably wrong. for what it's worth the numbers involved in this at any meaningfully political level are tiny - most of those making up the number are p*ssed up idiots who are enjoying the chance to scrap with the police, throw stuff and do a bit of looting (are they're sadly too thick to realise it's all being filmed). riots in the uk aren't often overt political acts - they are more often a hot weather event for low life racist and bigoted thugs to abuse public spaces stupidly believing that in amongst others they won't be caught. for some people (historically on the left as well as the right) the riot and thuggery is the end in itself. the challenge for the police is to get the small number directing it - but once it's started i suspect it doesn't actually need much directing. in the heat of events we are always in danger of over-thinking this stuff. | And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show |

I agree with everything you've said there. Where we differ is I think SM companies should be more accountable (by their own standards, and also forced to be by law) and you think they're fine as they are. I agree it's not the end of days but we should be looking for ways to stop this happening at all. Every other broadcast medium has standards, laws to abide by and repercussions (to themselves not their audience) if they transgress, so I don't see why social media should be any different (other than it's more difficult to do - but being more difficult shouldn't be a reason to give up and do nothing).
