Defensive shape yesterday 10:30 - Aug 11 with 2286 viewsDubtractor

Really noticeable that we very quickly set as a back 5 when out of possession. Johnson covered a hell of a lit of ground, getting forward plenty, but still getting in shape as needed.

Stating the obvious a bit I know, but clearly we're getting drilled for games where we need to do a lot more defending.

There is also a change in the midfield set-up, with much more emphasis on a high-intensity press in front of the defence. Harness & Hutch suit that style perfectly, Chappers less so.

Whether we line up that way next week, time will tell but we have it as an option.

I think we had to didn’t we, no chance we have long durations of the ball.

We’ll be good again... one day

I thought Town looked particularly solid in that first 60 mins. We defended with physicality on the ground and in the air, and yet when coming out of defence we moved the ball much more quickly and with purpose and got the ball forward much more quickly. None of this ponderous tippy tappy stuff from last season where if we try to do that at PL we’ll be torn apart I think.

Yes. Stuart Watson picked up that we were playing three central defenders with Johnson and Davis as wing backs. Agree that we will need to be more solid in defence.

I'd also consider an extra man in midfield but we don't have one.

Wouldn't be surprised to see us go for 5 at the back at times and play on the break more

Szmodics is a decent ball carrier, he does a lot of what Chaplin does but probably offers more when the chips are down. He's a decent ball carrier and is lively.

Kieran saw it was more of a tweak of the system rather than a change outright. I saw it as Johnson playing a deeper role than Burns or whoever has played that side before. Was talking to Westy and he said it helped things on the other side of the pitch as well as moved everyone over, meaning there was more cover in behind Leif Davis.

McKenna: Some Positives and Steps Forward 10th Aug 2024 16:35
Blues manager Kieran McKenna felt there were positives and steps forward from his side as they beat OGC Nice 1-0 in their final pre-season friendly at Portman Road this afternoon. 7

We haven't played any ponderous tippy tappy stuff since the dark days of Lambert - pointless posession football that we have never played under McKenna.

I guess there are different ways to analyse it, and it will shift with and without the ball. I did wonder, when the team sheet was announced, whether it might be CBs at times. I suppose Axel is able to do what JD used to do as a sort of CB/RB hybrid when needed, but with a general upgrade in some skills and attributes.

It will be the same for most games this season which is why I was surprised that Muric went long so often resulting in us giving the ball back to them. When we get the ball this season we need to do all we can to keep it.

My point is yesterday we tended to get the ball forwards quicker. A lot less short square passes .

I suspect will have to be more direct and attack with pace in the PL, that's just the nature of how it will be for a while

Well if nothing else the first two games will give us a yard rule ( I work in old measures) as to how far we’ve developed. I think we’re doing phenomenally well tbh.
