What we learnt today 14:55 - Aug 17 with 3581 views | nodge_blue | 1. Greaves was terrific. Really good defender. And to be fair Wolfie did alot right too. 2. Badly exposed down the wings. Difficult quality to stop but there were far too many chances coming from those positions in the last thirty mins. 3. I keep wanting Jack Taylor to show the player he can be. But again today his passes kept hitting the opponent and once even led to an attack breaking down and them breaking. He could well be under threat now. 4. Delap had some good moments. Think he will grow into a good player. 5. We can already see chances will be much fewer and we will have to be lethal with what we get.

What we learnt today on 15:13 - Aug 17 with 3296 views | MattinLondon | Omari had a good game but thought that we lacked energy in the middle of the pitch. We didn’t disgrace ourselves by any means. Without doubt, Liverpool will come away thinking that they didn’t have it their own way.
What we learnt today on 15:17 - Aug 17 with 3238 views | ArnieM | I know we lost but I’ve come away from that game feeling really proud of our players. Every single one of them raised their game today and we didn’t look out of place in this division. Liverpool’s class told in the tbf of course, but there is so much to take away from today that is positive, and we still have some really good players to come into the side and bed in. I’d say things look very bright going forwards.

I thought the energy was fine first half. Bit disappointing that the momentum just flipped and suddenly we couldn't get a grip in the game. McKenna was just saying we may need to sit and hold when we go down rather than just straight push for an equaliser and get more exposed. Difficult balance to strike. Hutchinson has the PL touch and control needed.

What we learnt today on 15:18 - Aug 17 with 3229 views | Illinoisblue | Agree on Taylor, he’ll be frustrated after that. Gave the ball away two or three times. But perhaps a little unfair to judge him on that second half when we’re chasing the game, Liverpool still pressing like crazy and the subs disrupt the flow of the game.

Exactly. Liverpool have some world class players and world cup winners.

Yeah, hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I actually thought Burns struggled for the most part today, but the game did seem to swing on his injury - and perhaps Szmodics or Harness should have come on for him instead of Johnson.

Posted this on another thread - "Noticeable that we hit a huge wall of tiredness very suddenly in the 2nd half. Interesting point made by the TNT commentator that for newly promoted sides it isn't just the physical tiredness that can be an issue, but all the adrenaline & excitement of the morning & build-up that can take energy out of them, so they need to learn to deal with that & pace themselves." Was surprised Taylor came on. Thought we badly missed Hirst (& Broady). Worried about Burns - hope it's not too bad (and not the same hammy - which one was it he pulled up for? can't remember). He came back on rather than going straight off. Then sat icing his leg. So hopefully a small pull. Bit worrying that it keeps happening though. Michael owen had the same. If you take explosive pace out of wes' game then you take away his big strength.

I was quite shocked he came back on tbh. Think if your body's given you a warning sign, it's best to listen to it & do what it's telling you to! Repeated strains can make recovery harder & harder (but there again I'm not a medic so what do I know!).

I guess we were wanting to keep eleven players on the pitch until Johnson was ready but it concerned me too.

It probably needs a good rest.

Yes, still 0-0 at that point iirc, but even so, I'd have thought that 3 pts dropped v 'pool would be less damaging than a worsened injury for Wes.

Agreed. It just seemed odd all round. Liverpool at home, on opening day, should be more about protecting players than the result. Looking back, it is interesting that the game really did swing around the injury. Liverpool definitely came out with more purpose in the second half but we were looking OK until Burns went on. Then we just seemed to completely lose the press etc.

Liverpool had that extra gear that they clicked into. In that last 30 minutes, they killed our midfield and passed around them with excellent quick passing and off the ball running. I think that second half will be really beneficial to the team though. It showed what a top level side can be capable of.

Yes agreed. Didn't have a great time when he came on. I like him, but I can't see him playing much if we get this Napoli lad too. He'll be 5th/6th choice.
