Potential squad then.... 08:45 - Aug 23 with 1904 views | itfcjoe | GK - Muric, Walton, Slicker RB - Johnson, Tuanzebe, Clarke LB - Davis, Townsend CB - Ahmedhodzic, Woolfenden, Greaves, Edmundson, Burgess CM - Morsy, Phillips, Cajuste, Luongo, Taylor RW - Burns R10 - Hutchinson, Chaplin L10 - Broadhead, Harness, Szmodics, Clarke ST - Hirst, Delap, Al Hamadi, Ladapo, Broja 28 senior players plus 2 U21 players (Delap and Hutchinson). Looks likely that if we get Ahmedhodzic a CB will go because we don't need 5 CBs and 3 RBs in the squad, George Edmundson the furthest down the pecking order here In the attacking position, Ladapo is obviously another one to go. Then probably leaves the 3rd player needed to leave as Jack Taylor, Marcus Harness and Ali Al-Hamadi as those 3 seem furthest from starting a game. Ali prob the most likely if we have 3 out and out 9s ahead of him, whereas Harness' versatility will help him. The big question mark for me is who plays on the RW in Burns' absence. We've seen Ben Johnson do it, Omari do it, we know Liam Delap can do that role....for me we want to best replicate what Wes gives us out there as an explosive attacking threat who can also defend effectively when required

Potential squad then.... on 08:58 - Aug 23 with 1724 views | TownieRob | I noticed on Saturday how Burns was used as our 'out ball' when we couldn’t play out from the back, due to his aerial strength. I can see this becoming a tactic when we’re struggling to play through the high press. With that in mind, maybe Delap will be the most likely to fill that RW role?

I think Burns is unique in that he does stick to the wing. A lot of wingers drift inside these days. I actually felt after watching the entire Liverpool game again, that hugging the line was giving Pool problems, it was stretching their back four. It was as if Robertson kept expecting to come inside but he didn't, and the CH wasn't going across to fill the gap.

potentially, but i don't see mckenna trusting delap to do wes' defensive work and tracking back (not yet at least!), so the system and/or the player needs to be adapted

Wes drifted inside against Coventry I seem to recall 🤔 Some good points on here about how important Wes in for us & the McKenna quote really makes that clear. Against Liverpool I had been a bit disappointed when watching it live, as he hadn't really taken on the full back & attacked, in order to send in great trademark crosses or cutbacks; but I got a chance to watch it back the other night & you see the work he is putting in, on & off the ball, and of course I remembered it was Andy Robertson he was facing, so his role was very much with defending in mind, as was recognised by Johnson coming on for him rather than Szmodics or Harness, with Omari moving to the right. The point about his height & strength in winning a high ball is a really important one.

Hutch is effective off the right but when you are playing the likes of Liverpool/Man City etc Burns really comes into his own due to his defensive capabilities. When Leif pushes on high, he effectively drops in as a right back and the whole back line shifts over to cover the space. Having someone that can drop in and defend, as well as being a big threat on the counter is invaluable to our system, which is why Burns wil be a big miss. He really does have the physicality for Premier league football.
