Really impressed by how Labour has cleaned up sleaze 11:37 - Aug 25 with 4778 viewsthebooks

Much nicer than those Tory chaps.

I do question why Keir Starmer needs a £3000 donation from Waheed Ali just so he can buy some glasses, though. Or another £16,000 for clothes. Can’t he just buy them like the rest of us?

It's unfortunate (for you) that you didn't get any perks like many of us do from time to time. I bet you'd have accepted them if offered though?!

Every gift in every walk of life has strings attached in some way, unless it's a birthday pressie from your mum. It's a long way from "sleaze" though.

So, if it's a tory, it's sleaze, if it it's the labour party it's a perk!

Hahahahahahahahaha.

You clearly don't know the difference between a gift/donation and giving multi-million pound contracts to companies that don't make the thing you want and end up making rubbish, unusable versions.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

It amazes me how politicians get away with all the freebies etc. After years of working for what was then a major company in this Country I took redundancy after 25 years. After a year and a half dossing about I decided to apply for a similar but far less well paid job with the MOD working as a civvy in their stores. The pay in 2005 was £12,000 a year compared to the £21,000 I had on my previous job. I hadn't been in the job for a month or so when I was told I had to go on a course. This entailed learning to repair tentage, rucksacks etc. Speaking to the previous owner of the job they told me if I had to travel home on a Friday I could claim overtime. After several weeks on the course I filled in a claim form and was duly paid expenses. Then out of the blue I was asked whether it was overtime or travelling time. Apparently overtime had to be pre-approved and travel time was different. I said it was travel time. So I had to pay back £61. The difference between travel time and overtime. But it didn't stop there I was hounded like a criminal and in the end spook to my boss, a Major, who managed to stop the hounding. The rules for accepting anything as a Civil Servant are extremely strict. Even purchasing an item on behalf of the armed forces you are not allowed for instance to have club card points. That's why I cannot believe how these people get so much abd are allowed to get away with it.

I thought I'd have a look at the They Work for You website.

The most recent entry for John McDonnell shows he received no gifts, benefits or hospitality. And nor did he in the four years he was shadow chancellor: I haven't checked any other entries.

This shows it can be done, but his recent expulsion from the Parliamentary party suggests he does not meet the ethical (money-grabbing?) standards expected of a Starmerite MP.

Every party has donors and I'm sure they all get a few perks for their efforts (I'd be annoyed if I donated thousands to the cause and got nothing in return).

This is barely even a story but to equate it to the Tory sleaze we've seen is like comparing a parking ticket offence to Nazi war crimes.

Have you never accepted a freebie, been at an event with a free bar, or got preferential treatment or a gift through your job?

Actually, I did get free tickets to a conference that a supplier I’d used had put on. It was relevant to my work, and I paid for travel, hotel etc.

I didn’t give them a key to the office and a place at meetings in return. Nor had they bought me a really expensive suit, some shoes and a couple of pairs of glasses.

This sort of cash for access story stuck around Blair, Mandelson etc. and the number of Labour MPs (including our very own) working for PR firms representing companies directly affected by government policy will be a problem for Labour.
