No new striker... no problem! 15:38 - Aug 30 with 1566 views | mutters | I understand the desire to see a new shiny player (though don't we have enough new shiny players to get excited about?), but if there aren't any further additions it's not the end of the world. We don't rely one on player to get a huge percentage of our goals, it's spread throughout the team. Hirst got 7 goals in total last year Moore got 7 goals in total last year Which accounted for ~15% of our total goals. We will be fine if nobody new arrives.

No new striker... no problem! on 15:53 - Aug 30 with 1448 views | DanTheMan | The biggest issue isn't the goals, but how it affects our system. It's a bit like last year where Hirst got injured and we had to use Jackson upfront. He wasn't as good as Hirst at holding the ball up and pulling defenders out of position. The goals are obviously nice as well, but I think it's that ability that really helps those behind them get the goals to make up for it.

No new striker... no problem! on 16:00 - Aug 30 with 1397 views | Len_Brennan | What if Delap gets injured tomorrow & is out until the New Year? Or what if Hirst breaks down, just as he looks ready to join in full training, & is out for a further 2 months? What if both happen? Is it too much of a risk, after all the transfer business we have done, to leave ourselves so exposed in a key position. There has to be one of them coming in, and this talk is all part of the brinkmanship.

Or, what if Hirst looks out of his depth? Which is still a possible outcome. Leaving ourselves exposed in a key position is all that I'm worried about, like you.

Szmodics is not a McKenna #9.

It's amazing that after all this time and repeated explanations from KM people still don't grasp the role AND importance of the number 9 in our set-up.....and still focus on the goals column. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He’s not a #9 at all, he’s a #10. This notion that he’s a striker is a huge misconception based upon how many he scored last year.

No new striker... no problem! on 16:53 - Aug 30 with 1092 views | FrimleyBlue | As said earlier it's not the goals I'm bothered about as we have others to score them. But it's having a striker who can be a cog in the system in the final third. If Hirst didn't have his recent injury history I wouldn't be so worried but because he has spent more time off the pitch than on it we are left with only one option. Al hamadi I'm afraid isn't that sort of striker and we know ladapo isn't at this level

He could certainly be used as one of two up front, if that were the formation in which he was being asked to play. He certainly has the attributes to do that. But yes, he definitely is not a '9' in a one-up-front scenario. For what it's worth, I think he'll be our top scorer this season.

Probably but from #10, like Chappers was in L1

So we would tweek the way we play slightly until either were back. Sure McKenna can work it out.

Spot on. We went through this last season in the winter when Hirst got injured and before we could bring in Moore and Al-Hamadi. Ladapo was at Charlton, we were trying Broadhead as a false nine (which didn't really work) and we struggled to make it work upfront for several weeks. I don't want to go through that again in the Prem and I doubt McKenna does either. [Post edited 30 Aug 2024 17:53]
