His Grandparents are Irish, he's been capped 3 times by Ireland and given the history between England and Ireland I think not celebrating is perfectly fine

They should change the eligibility rules anyway - place of birth or have to live in the country for a long period of time.

I don't mind him not celebrating, but it's the performative "look I'm not celebrating" gesture that irritates me

Should be that if you hold a passport for a country then you can play for them. It shouldn’t be for FIFA to tell people what nationality they are

As soon as he developed and England came calling he turned his back on Ireland. Now he wants to show Ireland respect by not celebrating a goal for England.

That’s not for me, he may as well of celebrated like he won the World Cup at least he would be being true to himself.

Why is it not ok to show respect to a country he must feel a close affiliation to?

Or is your actual issue that he's not showing enough passion for England?

Bit weird all that booing including the national anthem. Now if England fans had done that at Wembley uefa would be all over it!

The crowd booed him and Grealish every time they touched the ball as well as during our anthem. Respect was not deserved.

Quite right, that showed up the notion that we should ‘support’ the home nations in any tournament!
The footballing supporters in those countries do not like us at all.

Erm, Ireland isn't a home nation and if you're unsure why they would boo us then I might suggest a history lesson is in order

If he respected them he wouldn’t have switched to play for England. He made that decision and there is nothing wrong with it but own it don’t pretend he cares for Ireland and make a big deal of not celebrating.

My god mate, he was 19 when he played for Ireland and 20 when he made the decision to switch. I didn't have a clue what I was doing at that age!

He's still only 25 and has made the decision to not celebrate against a country that he has previously represented. It doesn't make him any worse at football and it doesn't mean he's unpatriotic or not proud to play for England

Well of course you are correct but whenever they do actually manage to get to a tournament we are all supposed to gush over the little old Irish! Now if you want to go back into history surely every body has a reason to boo each others anthem! Most people have grown up and even at Wembley the anthems are respected.
Still it’s alright to disrespect the British/English anthem isn’t it🙄
History is history and no amount of handwringing can change it move on!

That’s what I’d go with. Surely you shouldn’t be able to represent a nation unless you’re one of its nationals?

(Not that I lose any sleep over it).

Are you stupid? The people in NI made a decision 100yrs ago to stay in the UK so no we don’t occupy anything. NI is a separate country from the republic so don’t try and rewrite history.
