Lewes FC the first club to invest equally in the men's and women's game. 14:58 - Sep 8 with 2772 views | Hugoagogo_Reborn | Could be interesting to see what this club achieves in the coming decade or so. I always wonder where we'd be if both games had grown equally, rather than the women's game being banned in 1921. https://www.theguardian.com/football/article/2024/sep/08/a-different-goal-how-wo Also interesting points about fitness and training for girls, and the issue with ACL injuries in the women's game. Appreciate not all are interested in women's football, but I know some are. Lewes are a very interesting club who think differently. I like the cut of their jib. [Post edited 8 Sep 2024 15:01]

Lewes FC the first club to invest equally in the men's and women's game. on 16:27 - Sep 8 with 2573 views | ParisBlue | Relegated last year, struggling this year, our women's team stuffed them 5-0 today. It must also be easier to initiate equal pay when your mens team is isthmian premier league. What's obvious over the last few years is one by one, the women's teams not affiliated to a big mens team are falling away whilst clubs invest in their women's side e.g Newcastle, Portsmouth, Southampton. Looks like we're working to a larger budget this year, I've seen opponents refer to us as being full-time though very little on that from the club (and that can mean a variety of things in the women's game).

Weren’t their women in the Championship last year and their men in the Southern Premier? So aren’t the men either very overpaid or women underpaid?

I think it is going to be very hard to create parity in two very different environments, but the best clubs to try this model are those whose mens team aren''t completely eclipsing the women's set-up. How can clubs like Man U embrace the women's set up when it costs them £10m a year? It's a loss maker and bigger clubs will always have a sense of it being a millstone, rather than an opportunity. Shame, really, as there has been no better time to invest than now, when fan engagement is at an all time high in the UK. It's a real business opportunity for some savvy investors prepared to take a risk and work for the dividend. It has been good to see a real effort by ITFC to embrace the women's team over the last few years. I'm sure the US investment has a part to play in that, as women's football in the US is far more advanced in the timescale, due to it being a female college/uni sport. [Post edited 8 Sep 2024 16:38]

Lewes FC the first club to invest equally in the men's and women's game. on 16:51 - Sep 8 with 2489 views | management | Not totally convinced this will work long term, Lewes Ladies relegated last season and struggling this season. Lewes mens team started really well this season and potentially a move to National League South, though losing in the FA Cup to a Combined Counties side is a real money loss. Attendances at Both Male & Female, very similar ie 930-940. If the male team goes up and ladies go down, no way will the male team compete financially in a higher division if salaries are equal with Ladies team in Tier 4 potentially. Interestingly admission prices are both the same £13 though Season Tickets are £100 more expensive for the male team. Lewes Ladies are expensive re march admission and season tickets as ie Charlton are cheaper re match day admission and significantly re season tickets. The male team is very youthful so at this stage salaries are not unreasonable but a higher tier will mean recruiting a few more gnarly experienced players and with that comes higher wages.

Yep, mens team are working their way up again after some serious financial issues saw them fall from Conference National down 3 levels. Rowdy set of supporters their as well - there's some decent fanbases for some of the non-league sussex teams.

Lewes FC the first club to invest equally in the men's and women's game. on 18:26 - Sep 8 with 2307 views | Kropotkin123 | Someone made the point that was reiterated on the price of football that the women's team is more successful and popular than the men's team. So in some ways they are underpaid by pairing the wages. With that said, the counterpoint they raised was that much of the sponsorship they have brought in has been on the basis of this equal pay structure, and would they have faired as well without it... Probably not. Interesting discussion.

Indeed. As I stated earlier. Now is the time for businesses to invest in the women's game. Engagement is huge, The Guardian article drew a reference to how Taylor Swift has absolutely conquered her fan market by gearing every aspect of her branding and marketing to the fans. She has made billions on that model. There is a huge market in women's football at the moment. I hope it enables Lewes FC to grow the club as a whole, and the benefits are seen across both affiliated genders. [Post edited 8 Sep 2024 19:07]

Lewes's men and women have been on the same pay structure for years. Until this season the women have been tier 2 whilst the men have been way lower. So the 18th best womens team have been paid the same as the 200th best mens. That isn't equality.

But given that far smaller numbers of people want to watch women's football than men's, isn't seeking "equality" in pay irrational?

There is a difference in equity and and equality. Equality would be paying them based on their value on the market, and you can bet that women footballers are overpaid on that measure. I would argue though that it is reasonable to pay women over the odds if the businessmen see a large grow potential. Equity is basically communism. It is paying people the same regardless of their value on the market. It is entirely idealistic. An argument that is often put forth is that male tennis players should be paid more because they play best of 5 matches, whereas women play best of 3, but if that is all it takes I'm offering to play best of 7 matches for more money. If the women bring in more money for a best of 3 match, then they should be paid more than the men who play a best of 5 match. There aren't many people demanding that men get pay parity for modelling when women make much more than men. In short women footballers should be paid what they are worth and there should not be any artificial barrier put on them and they can even be subsidized to some extent by the men's team if that is seen as a business investment.
