Keeper Number 23:18 - Sep 8 with 2029 viewsPhilTWTD

Montserrat's keeper was wearing number five in their game tonight. I was always a fan of Eastern European or South American sides having keepers with unusual numbers but their fans' Twitter account wasn't pleased.

I remember back in the early 90's, Bob Bolder wore 2 for Charlton. Squad numbers weren't even a thing beneath the Prem at that point either so all a bit weird. Their numbers were allocated alphabetically. Stuart Balmer was 1, Curbishley was 3.

Edit. Also reminds me of when Ossie Ardiles wore no.1 for Argentina, again presumably for alphabetical reasons.

I never knew that about Charlton - fantastic remembering there.

Have found a video to confirm - 00:52 seconds in.

Number 11, so not quite that disgusting.

The starting position of Muric suggests he actually wants to be a number 5 and play alongside Greaves and Woolfenden.

I know it shouldn't bother me. But it really does and I'm not sure why.

NFL have recently stopped insisting positions have a number within a certain range. I used to be able to understand what was going on as you could work out what players were meant to be where on the pitch. Not a hope now.

Argies 78 world cup squad was numbered in alphabetical order. Attacking midfielder Norberto Alonso wore 1. Ardiles wore 2 and so on. Their keeper Filiol also wore 5.

Would love to see Ali Al-Hamdi up front with 1. on his back

I'm sure Sheffield Wednesday had their goalkeepers wear #1 and #2 a few years ago.

Sure I remember Joe Wildsmith coming on as a sub for them at Portman Road wearing #2
