Yesterday's Ref - Reffed more L1 games this season than PL 10:13 - Oct 27 with 1536 viewsBellevue_Blue

All things considered, he didn't have a complete shocker. The second yellow for Clarke is a bad one, the Leif yellow is absurd and on the whole, he seemed to give Brentford more of the 50/50's.

What I don't get is the profile of his experience. The PL is the biggest league in the world. There were 5 PL games yesterday that should have been reffed by 5/10 of the BEST in the entire country.

Instead, we get an inexperienced ref in just his 4th PL game. In his whole career, he's reffed 4 PL, 14 Championship, 18 L1, 23 L2 and 68 in the National League. He was referring in the U18 Premier League last year!

HOW can we have officials with just 55 games of EFL experience in the PL ... this is the pinacle of Football in this country! Baffling.

Not often I complain about refs but he gave us nothing at all first half. The Clarke sending off, I'm sure Clarke got the ball too.

Tbf even a ref with 100 games under his belt has to ref no1 to 99 at somewhere sometime!.... I'd have been quite happy with his decisions yesterday, it's the VAR interference I have the issue with!

How does an inexperienced referee get more experience in the Premier League?

He is probably on the fast track development path due to his performances in the lower leagues, and giving him a smaller Prem game is a great chance for him to develop especially with 2 x Managers who are known not to be in the refs face, at a smaller ground.

I smile when people say that he gave the opposition more of the "50/50s", by the very definition they could have gone either way - the view from Brentford fans may be different.

I'm amazed anyone can be bothered to referee these days, it is one of the most thankless tasks in football.

I hear what you say, but just 14 Champ games is very very limited top end experience.

My problem is not giving people a chance, my problem is just promoting someone for a one-off game to get him the experience, it's at the expense of us! How can we expect him to have total control, make fractional decisions when he has just 50 games reffing in the EFL!

Surely the threshold for refereeing in the PL nowadays is not 14 championship games. And if he is so good that 14 is enough, he should exclusively ref PL games. He should absolutely not be sent out to referee L1 matches with the odd PL game.

The only thing of the major decisions I think he might have got wrong was Clarke's second yellow. It did look like he got the ball first so wouldn't even have been a foul in that case.

The penalty and offside were both close, but correct.

Maybe, but how many games should there be. If you’re good enough then you should get the chance.

I would have thought at least half a season, probably a whole one. The game is signiicantly quicker, more skilful and the cheating more sophisticated, as well as the additional complication of var at a time when you are just settling into dealing with more accomplished players.

I guess if they are going to lob him in any where, it's going to be in one of the smaller PL stadiums sadly

I agree with this wholeheartedly, it's almost a different game!

Last weekend he was reffing Barnsley vs Charlton in L1, the weekend before he was reffing Shef Utd vs Leeds in the Champ, middle of September he had a League 2 game.

How can you create any consistency when you have such a variance in the experience? It's total mismanagement

I get it but how are we talking about 'lobbing' a ref into a PL game! It's the bloody Premier League, let him prove his quality at the top of the EFL. He's reffed 14 Champ games total.

He's obviously been fast tracked up the league

He did seem a total homer and gave us very little, the Clarke penalty is a penalty but the second yellow looks questionable

Was he booked for the foul or for the waving finger afterwards?

Wish he hadn't wagged the finger as that made the ref's decision for him. I think he was still deciding before then. Have to take it and move on.
