Liam Delap 21:54 - Nov 2 with 3026 views | Bugs | I know he didn't score today, but he just gets better and better. I thought he was excellent again today. The turn he did in our own half away from the centre back to put him on his way towards goal was just poor class. Also love that he is so aggressive and plays to and pushes the limits.
Liam Delap on 22:05 - Nov 2 with 2943 views | WicklowBlue | Totally agree, he is some player and will continue to get better and better. Full of confidence which others will feed off, in the second half while outside the box showed fantastic footwork to spin on the ball away from the defender. Maybe could learn to use his aggression more sensibly and avoid niggly free kicks but he really gets under the oppositions skin. I thought overall today bar the first 10-15mins and the last 20 (when down to 10) we were excellent and would have deserved the 3 points. Can see the team starting to "gel" playing at a higher tempo, more accurate passing. If we keep that up we'll start keeping the points adding up.

Yeah, it's a point I probably should have made. I love that aggressivity, but also it's still a tad raw. Although his yellow cards have slowed down, so maybe that's being learnt.

That just wasn't an option for either, I don't think. They had run their race, and probably a bit more.

I disagree, they were both working super hard chasing things down we needed fresh legs. Naturally if we had taken off Phillips for Cajuste when we made the initial subs things might have panned out differently. Springing Ayew off the bench got them a point. He flattened Morsy (should have been a free kick imho)and Burns just bounced off him. As per another thread, in January whatever headroom we have we need to inject some more beasts like Delap into the squad if possible.

Is this modern football now where players can’t play 90 mins?

Delap is an ultra fit elite professional. We were a totally different team when he went off. Hirst up top, then move Delap out wide. His strength and aggression would have seen us over the line today. Hes not bullied off the ball like Wes was, even after 85mins of a game in him. Really frustrating seeing him getting taken of, he sets the tone of how we play.

I disagree. There was nothing wrong with the substitutions at the time. It felt watching it at the time that he and Szmodics were just beginning to tire. There’s nothing wrong with the bring on the cavalry approach that served us so well last year and had Leicester not had the extra man wearing black, it'd have been 2-0 and goodnight. It was the sending off that negated the subs in my view.

SS was tiring, I agree. Bringing on the Calvary approach in the championship when we are flying is a little different to doing it when we haven’t won a game so far this season in the PL, with spurs away next! I think we have to adapt our approach or we are going down, and going down with a few records.

…is gonna offer more defensively than Jack Clarke at 100%. For the last two seasons the opposition have dreaded our subs coming on, this season the predictability of them is costing us. KM needs to learn in that respect.

Is that not being wise after the event? The subs came on to stretch Leicester again. Initially they looked like doing that but the sending off killed it. Clarke cannot defend to save his life at the moment and would never have been brought on had McKenna known we’d lose a player. What I wondered at the time was that given Clarke’s pace and inability to defend why not leave him further up the pitch for an out ball. He was sort of in no man’s land.

….being wise after the event, because before every match you can look at our bench options and make a very, very good guess at who’s gonna come on, who’s gonna come off and even at what time it will happen. Did anyone really think that Broadhead would come on for SS? No, everyone knew it would be Clarke. Clarke (at the moment) is not a player that you bring on when you are defending a lead, it’s as simple as that.

Liam Delap on 08:24 - Nov 3 with 1826 views | Blue_Heath | Agree, he had a great game and should have been left on the pitch, Hirst did nothing other get booked. Delap is a fantastic outlet and would have bought us fouls to help run the clock down or possibly even banged in a winner out of nowhere.

We made the subs to extend the lead and kill the game, not defend it. Nothing wrong in that and it would have probably worked if the myopic ref hadn’t been in FFP Leicester’s back pocket. I was discussing Broadhead with the mush that sits next to me and we wondered at the time whether or not KM might bring him on, but agreed he would bring Clarke on. Broadhead’s a clever player with quick feet, an eye for goal and I reckon might be able to play at this level.

Hirst's first touch is a great flick on to Clarke, who wins a free kick which we should subsequently get a penalty from. About 2 minutes after they came on we suddenly had 10 men and the game is completely different. If we'd have brought Cajuste on at the same time, as it initially looked like we were going to, or if the officials did their job, we would have gone on to win the game. Any criticism of the first 2 subs is unjust imo. [Post edited 3 Nov 2024 10:45]
