Im not 100%, but probably about 90%. Nagging feeling is that it was near enough a 50/50 ball and whether it really denied us anything- he basically just got to a 50/50 early enough to poke the ball away, but not to anyone or in any place where he would have retained control. Which makes it more of an unavoidable collision.
But then I look at the sending off seconds later, where Phillips is momentarily late for a 50/50 and the defender has hoofed it aimlessly clear in time, and if thats a foul outside the area, then it should have been a penalty inside the area. |  | | |

It's not a 50/50 at all. Chaplin has control of the ball, takes a touch to knock it inside of him and gets flattened. If Fatawu doesn't impede him then he takes a shot at goal. I've really, really tried to see it from another viewpoint but I just can't. [Post edited 3 Nov 2024 16:31]

100% this. He’s got control, shifts it to his left where he’d have a free shot on goal and gets wiped. He’s jumped to avoid getting clattered with a planted leg, so I can only assume the officials thought that meant he was trying to buy it. But it wasn’t theatrical at all (and Chapers can do theatrical!). It should definitely have been be a penalty. |  |

Yeah tbf, Ive just watched it back again (hadnt done since last night!) and I thought he had just stretched out for the ball, but he did have a touch on it first which Id forgotten/not noticed. | | | |

Its got to be that. The only thing I can see from it that potentially stops it being a pen.
The ref can't see it so I get why he didn't give it.
Question is... can var get involved in a clear and obvious error IF the ref hasn't given something because he can't see it? Is that no longer a clear and obvious error as he didn't make a decision to begin with? |

Frimley Blue. What do you mean the ref couldn’t see it? It happened right in front of him! As clear & stonewall a penalty as I’ve ever seen in over fifty years of watching football! Disgraceful refereeing & downright cheating. Simply beyond belief. That’s without VAR which has multiple cameras there to avoid such blatant mistakes. Someone must have pulled the lead out for that not to be given. Outrageous! |  | | |

EPL are using referees and VAR to select who they want to keep in the premier league. It's obvious from what I have seen so far. I can see relegation/ promotion dumped in a few years when they finally get the teams they want. It's a farce. | | | |
