I'm sure most people would consider referring to Badenoch as a person who represents "White supremacy in a blackface", is deserving of having the whip removed for being racist.

Too right she should have the whip removed for being racist. The colour of Badenoch’s skin is utterly immaterial (as is her gender) and in 2024 there is no place for comments like that. It’s should about Badenoch’s competence, beliefs and leadership abilities..

As an aside I heard a lot of comments similar to this working in Peckham in the early 90s directed at people I worked with. It was absurd and wrong then, just as it is now.

It never ceases to amaze me that even people in the public eye can be so openly racist.

I mean what is wrong with people that they can't see beyond someones skin colour.

It’s worth pointing out that despite the awful language used in the tweet that she shared, Dawn Butler herself is a person of colour. I’m not excusing the language used, as it encourages white people, who have no idea of KB’s lived experiences to aim similar language in her direction. It’s also worth pointing out that this is not the first time she’s aimed that sort of slur in the direction of Kemi Badenoch, and she did similar with Priti Patel, but it’s important to put DB’s own ethnicity into the context of what was shared on twitter.

It is completely different to a poster on here who called her “Bad Enoch” over the weekend, which is a racist slur, or a former poster who once called her an “Uncle Tom”. White people dont get to decide who is a race traitor. Dawn Butler’s use of this sort of language gives a green light to people who think it’s ok to be racist if the victim is a Tory.

Edit. The exchange I referred to above.

Ah, shared tweet stuff is it. I don’t know why so many politicians still engage either Twitter - it’s a fool’s place to be.

How is Bad Enoch a racial slur? Surely it’s just a play on words without any racial connotation (although the similarities in their politics are obvious). Autocorrect does sometimes convert Badenoch to bad Enoch by the way (I’m not saying that was the case you’re talking about, but it’s happened to me).

I know most here aren't fans of KB or her politics. But I do admire her avoidance of making any noise whatsoever over her own heritage or gender. She's quite the opposite - she doesn't want it to be a thing, she doesn't want it to matter. Which is exactly the opposite of how her opponents see the world of course. Compare and contrast with Rachel Reeves and her "look at me, I'm the first woman to do this job, yay" budget opening remarks.

I'm probably in the minority here in wanting Kemi to do well both personally and in rebuilding the damaged Conservative brand into an effective and united opposition. But I can see the odds are stacked against her. There are those on the fringes of her party and Reform defectors who need winning back, that won't accept she is even British and therefore not qualified. Either that, or she's another "WEF puppet" who loves mass immigration. I've argued with a few of these types recently, which of course is a futile exercise. Then there are the race baiters of the left like the low-IQ Dawn Butler who will also never accept her and will attack her mercilessly as an agent of white supremacy. So I will be pleasantly surprised if Kemi's leadership turns out to be anything more than another IDS style caretaker stint.

Aiming a nickname at a black woman, using one of the country’s most high profile racists who wanted to deport every person who looked like Kemi Badenoch is a racist slur. And no, it was an auto correct.

There are also no similarities between Badenoch’s and Powell’s politics. One wants immigration with controls, the other wanted a whites only Britain with a halt to all immigration and repatriation of existing immigrants.

Pretty lazy comparison there mate.

An interesting side note on "Bad Enoch" - If I have understood correctly, his sidelining after the Rivers of Blood furore is what cleared the path for Mrs T to emerge as the figurehead of 'The New Right' of British politics at the time. Enoch would likely have become the leader of the party had he not found himself 'cancelled'. Late 20th C British political history would have followed a different path.

There are many broad similarities around their immigration views. Badenoch obviously doesn't want whites only, but in her own words 'not all cultures are equally valid'. Very thinly veiled racism imo. They both supported/glorified our colonial past and refuse to acknowledge the damages of it. Both appeal to people's base prejudices as a modem operandi (we call it populism now). Both anti-state intervention, social security, etc (even though Powell was Health Sec, he was a vocal opponent of social security apparently, whereas Kemi thinks maternity pay is too much and that autistic people get unfair preferential treatment). Etc., etc.

They're clearly not identically the same, but she's pretty grim and there are certainly echoes of a similar approach to things. (Although naturally they share the same views from that side of politics and may of those are mainstream and not offensive views).

(Edit - I wasn't around for Powell's time, so maybe the 'feel' of it was very different to Powell and I'm being unfair to Kemi, but I can only go on what I've read. And I do see some simplistic parallels).

It also asks the pertinent follow up question that I would like to be put to Dawn Butler: "In what way does Kemi support white supremacism?"

How can you just call "not all cultures are equally valid" thinly veiled racism? Can you not look at cultures in some countries and not think that if that culture were imported to the UK, it would have a negative effect?
Even looking at a mild case, I'm not a huge fan of American cultural influence on the UK in all sorts of areas.
FGM and Islamist views are not a positive influence on our culture.
You are going to have to explain how it would be racist of Badenoch to criticize the cultures of predominantly black countries and also why you would make it racial about other cultures. Does China have a bad culture because they ethnically cleanse and kill dissidents rather than their skin colour?

"Both anti-state intervention", shock horror two Conservatives have conservative views. It seems a stretch to compare he to Powell and feels like it's only a way to smear her.

Forget anti-state intervention, social security, maternity pay etc. All of which are domestic issues. Linking a black woman with Enoch Powell via a nickname is a racial slur.

The point seems to be totally lost on you.

Right. I didn't notice that. I upped the post for the comment "But I do admire her avoidance of making any noise whatsoever over her own heritage or gender. And no I don't agree with the statement. Dawn Butler is the opposite of "low iq" with what she has achieved. It's not a statement I would agree with or support. A lesson learned to read the whole post more carefully.

for me, the low iq comment is more of a dog whistle racist trope than a play on badenoch's name.

if jenrick's surname was badenoch, the same play on words would have been made due to their politics; i can't see the link between it and her race. however, if it's a known racist trope that i'm ignorant of then i apologise

I have heard the studies about different races and the IQ values and I am aware that some people assign different races different IQs. In a society where we judge people by the content of their character, none of this matters if true. I have never heard that used to insult women for being women. In terms of IQs, from the studies I have heard of men tend to dominate the very low end and very high end of the spectrum, with women more bunched in the middle. From that it would be possible to conclude that there are more male idiots than female idiots.

It's not a case of cheering on an insult, it's more of a practical issue. Are we expecting everyone to use a list of approved insults? Approved by who? To me low-IQ is a politer way of saying you're dumb, stupid, or an idiot and it sounds more autorotative.
We're getting into the realm of the OK sign being banned for being a white supremacist symbol, where we let minority use dictate our speech.

low iq is such a specific trump-ian insult that it's obvious dog whistle racism.

it may not be well-known in west german villages, but it has a specific meaning in right-wing discourse.

"How can you just call "not all cultures are equally valid" thinly veiled racism?" Easy, it's because you should judge someone on their ability and not the stereotype of their culture. Not doing so is the very definition of racism.

if you placed an add for a job and put in a caveat that said no Americans, you'd rightly get pulled up on it. You can dislike the culture all you like, but you can't discriminate on the basis of it.
