We shouldn't be surprised really, as lights were useless back in the day. We boy racers always bolted on extra spots onto the front bumpers of our Ford Escorts. TWTD.

Imagine driving a car that was looked down upon by Cortina drivers.

My dad had a Ford Cortina. Never worked, always had carburetor problems and wouldn't start. And it was turd brown. That was the boxy mk 4 though. Horrible car. Before me he also had a 1600 e which must have been a blast.

I got a few pelters about the unnecessary use of headlights last time I posted on 09:39 - Nov 6 with 1704 views | Guthrum | It was explained to me that some of the issue is automatically dipping headlights, which don't trigger until they are fully in view of an oncoming car (rather than when the glow first appears over a rise or round a corner). And don't work properly on rear lights. Another issue is loading. When the boot is full, the headlight aim will rise.

Agreed. My car has them and they are reasonably quick and reliable at a fair distance, but if you're meeting a car round a bend at close proximity its too slow as they won't react until you're virtually side-by-side. As with everything, the technology is introduced before it has been perfected so there are also issues with headlight identification, which are probably ironed out on cars newer than mine. I've turned mine off. They're a pain in the butt. See also lane departure warnings.

None of that nonsense on a Mark 1 Escort. Not even the 1300E

Could not depart lane in the good old days or you ended up on the bank or kerb. And not enough cars to worry about on the dual carriageway.

I bought a Mark III Cortina, Daytona yellow, and that carried on going no matter what. Then I had a Mark IV as a company car ~ jacket and change of shirt on a hanger dangling from the handle above the rear door, Level 42 at volume from the cassette player, sympathetic looks towards the lowly Escort drivers. Happy days.

Lane Departure Tech I get to drive lots off different cars, lane departure tech can be a massive issue. Toyota will keep you in lane quietly and competently, without any fuss when you override it BMW will try to rip your arms off if you do much as dare to override without use of indicators, which I found quite ironic

Bmw one is horrible. It should not resist when you gently move across on a motorway. Actively dangerous.

I did a bit of driving in France back in the days when their cars had the yellow headlights They were such a joy for oncoming cars, no glare or dazzle....just a soft orangey glow, very soothing and comfortable A bit of a trial if you were driving a yellow light car.... couldn't see a ruddy thing in front of you
