Finding fully remote work 15:45 - Nov 7 with 5272 views | ThisIsMyUsername | Does anyone have any tips (either of the general or 'secretive' kind) with regards to finding fully remote work? It would be a game-changer for me if I were to be able to work completely remotely, but it seems much easier said than done having been looking semi-regularly for the last 12 months+. I'm educated to Masters level and I now have three years' experience in healthcare (plus whatever I did before initially going to uni). I'm completely open at this point to changing industries altogether and I believe that I have built up a lot of more generalist experience and transferable skills. Is it just a case of looking every day on job boards and being one of several hundred applicants for whatever remote jobs come up? Surely there must be a better, more efficient and effective way. I have started looking at individual companies with the idea of blasting out some generalist CVs, but the problem is that I don't know exactly what I want to do next (I'd welcome a lot of potential opportunities to change path), or where in the nation/what those hypothetical companies may be. I live in west Suffolk, so local companies which might be relatively forward and remote-thinking to begin the search with aren't exactly numerous. I should probably ask for some guided advice from the careers service at my university, but also thought I would post about it on here. Thanks in advance for any pointers that people may have for me. The best part of work, apart from the getting beer tokens, is the relationships formed with colleagues who in many cases have gone on to be lifelong friends. [Post edited 7 Nov 2024 18:57]

One of the biggest reasons is so that I don't need to be tied down by geography. The past has taught me that life is uncertain and having a job that can be taken anywhere (well, to a point) very much appeals to me.

Finding fully remote work on 19:36 - Nov 7 with 1367 views | WicklowBlue | Prior to covid my commute was circa 2 hours each way, using car, feet, 50 min train and 25min feet again. I agree being in the office has many benefits but so does wfh. Many Tech companies are now enforcing Hybrid to ensure their facility expenses are justified. I'm on a remote work contract but been told my level and above are expected to be in the office 3 days a week starting in Jan. I'm 0.5 miles inside their commute radius lol, I'm just going to pollute the planet and drive in if they force the issue. Anyway, to add to others another possibility is a company that leverages local remote working hubs? Unsure about the health sector and your expertise but look into any possibility of jobs with startup/unicorn companies who will most definitely be more open to remote work and will pay above average for key skills. Job security may be less and highly pressured work environment but they pay super well

You'd think it would have come back out by now. Have you considered going to A&E?

Thank you for sharing. I'd be very interested in working in an innovative start-up. Would the best way to find them be via generic Google searches e.g. "start-up" AND "healthcare"? Can you expand please on what you mean by companies that leverage local remote working hubs?

If you are in West Suffolk then you could target Cambridge. Loads of healthcare companies, lots of them forward thinking and likely to be open to remote working. What roles have you had in healthcare thus far? I used to own a company conducting market research in healthcare. There are loads of different aspects of the healthcare industry and many of them lend themselves well to remote working. My company was originally office based and COVID changed that. I lost the fear associated with allowing people to work from home and realised it was a massive blessing - it meant I could recruit people from anywhere in the world. I think the current trend of making people return to the office is counter productive.

Get your LinkedIn profile up the date and make sure you have your experience listed. I'm not UK based but find a good recruiter in the area you are interested in. Most start ups target employees in their specific areas. For example prior to my latest promotion, our biggest competitor was bombarding me on LinkedIn with invitations to apply for the same level role I was in. (Would have offered better base salary, bonus and an instant lockout on my side, but some of us have ethics and plus their VP couldn't spell!) Most companies scour LinkedIn and other sites for talent. Make sure you have all your profiles on sites up to date and attractive. Sell yourself and try to get some good references on same. Re. Local working, I mean instead of commuting into London or further on a daily basis do any companies have a local work arrangement. Here in Ireland there are a number of government funded remote work hubs, instead of commuting miles and miles you can just plug in with others in a shorter distance.
Finding fully remote work on 02:08 - Nov 8 with 1117 views | tivo | Considering you worked in healthcare, looks for CSM / Support roles in Healthtech. I presume you're comfortable on computers? Initial roles will be quite basic but there is quick growth in IT especially when you understand the market of your clients over other CSM / Support team members. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I'll start by stating that my experience is now 15 years old - but the issue I found is less about finding the roles, it's about where you actually want to live. Mid-2000s I was working for a company that was 100% working from home, albeit with a modest amount of national and international travel which meant I was away from home for 1-2 weeks every couple of months. The rest of my time was working at home and I had a really good setup - and was living out near Woodbridge. However, that company was bought out and I didn't like the direction the new owners were taking so I started to look for a new role around 2009/2010. I found quite a few opportunities that would let me work from home 3-4 days a week if I didn't have to be at client site (which could be anywhere in the UK) - but wanted everyone in the office on a Friday - for 'team building'. The issue was, all of the opportunities I found were based in London - and whichever way you try and dress it up, living in Suffolk (unless you are five minutes from Ipswich station) is a b@stard if you have to regularly be in London. It was also bloody hard if I was on client work in the Midlands/North because it was either slow train from Ipswich to Peterborough to connect with trains heading to North East/Yorkshire or train into London, cross to Euston and then train up to Birmingham/Manchester. I couldn't find any decent opportunities locally - although I do think Cambridge would be worth a look. Suffolk based companies were a lot more 'traditional' and didn't even offer occasional working from home. In the end, we moved down to Chelmsford because both of us had to be in London 1-2 days a week and it just wasn't working from Suffolk. I appreciate things may have changed since Covid, but you probably need to cast your net quite wide if you want to find a role that works with living in Suffolk.
Finding fully remote work on 12:06 - Dec 6 with 762 views | ThisIsMyUsername | UPDATE: I am very happy to report that last week I was offered a fully remote job within the healthcare field, starting in January. This specific type of role is one that I have applied for several times over the last 12 months with no success. It seems a hard area of healthcare to get into, so I am excited to have a foot in the door and to see where the future takes me. As a healthcare professional by background, this type of role will allow me to nicely transfer my knowledge and experience. So the quest for a remote job, which started roughly two years ago, is over. Perseverance pays off. (Now let's see how long it takes me to start complaining about being stuck in the house every day).

Finding fully remote work on 13:05 - Dec 6 with 642 views | MJallday | very few places are offering "full" remote these days. its usually 1 or 2 days in office minimim. even the ones that went full remote in covid (banks) are now encouraging people at least 2 days a week in office i dont think theres a secret to it, the JD usually says what it is on the advert.

Congrats. Had so seen this at the time I’d have suggested persistence. I used to see a lot of people get through the door at our place on the second or third attempt. I think I was third attempt. You learn more about the organisation after a couple of goes, learn how to deal with their particular interview format, etc. useful advice for anyone currently job hunting. Anyway, congrats.
