Alex Scott for MOTD role ( fav according to some reports) 19:04 - Nov 13 with 7352 viewsFrimleyBlue

I must admit I think she's brilliant tbh. Shame about some of the usual thoughts that go with it. I understand some of them ( ms Aluko for example) But on Alex I think she's perfect for the role.

She’d be fine and it doesn’t really matter. They only need someone to read out a few scripted wisecracks between the briefest of highlights and Shearer’s mind numbingly uninsightful analysis. And besides, most people probably watch it when they’re pissed.

Or, they record it & fast forward though the drivel and "analysis" as most people only watch it for the goals & highlights. Changes in habits, availability of highlights elsewhere & so few PL games on a Saturday mean that MoTD viewing figures are now tiny & that's why BBC retain it because the commercial broadcasters know it's a dead duck. Another relic of the old age of 2 or 3 TV channels to which the BBC proudly cling.

MOTD still pulls in 6m viewers a week, it's hardly 'tiny' viewing figures.

It's 3-4x what any big PL game gets in this country

last season, it was averaging 4m viewers (including iPlayer) according to Mr Lineker. iPlayer & recording viewers aren't much use to advertisers. Lineker would also have an interest in massaging upwards any figures.
Yes, I accept that this figure isn't "tiny", but it's a show in serious decline & it's fair to question whether the BBC's £200m+ investment in PL highlights is a good use of licence payers' money.

Fortunately viewing figures aren't the only factor when it comes to being "a good use of license payers money" otherwise the BBC would just end up like every terrestrial channel

I appreciate it might be in decline, but it's still the flagship football highlights show and is almost like a public service to some people who don't have sky or go online very little.

It's clearly still a big deal otherwise there wouldn't be this much noise about who the next presenter will be

I like MOTD and I've been watching it for over 50 years. I know it's not "woke" and no longer PC to say so, but for me it's a "lads" program, a bit like meeting your mates down the pub. I always enjoyed the Lineker Shearer Wright trio for the banter. Sorry, I know I'm an old git and such views are not seen as acceptable in 2024. I've nothing against Alex Scott per se, who comes across as a pleasant and professional presenter, but she's not right for MOTD in my opinion. If the BBC do make her Lineker's successor, then I suspect viewing figures will go the same way as Football Focus has done.

The BBC are desperate to keep some sort of high profile sport & MoTD clearly fits that bill. This is part of justifying the increasingly anachronistic TV licence fee. I would guess the MoTD viewer spectrum is heavily biased towards older people.

What would you propose instead of the license fee?

They’ll likely go for a female. It’s a classic BeeB move after Lineker given his questionable social / private affairs with females. A means to deflect and maintain a level of integrity with as little damage to the institution as possible.
