I must admit I think she's brilliant tbh. Shame about some of the usual thoughts that go with it. I understand some of them ( ms Aluko for example) But on Alex I think she's perfect for the role.

Colin has loved football since childhood and spent maybe a third of his career talking or writing about it. Alex has loved, lived and breathed football since childhood. Colin is a few years older than Alex.

If it's the more superficial stuff, football trivia, Colin is my phone a friend or pub quiz specialist every time. If it's real insight into playing the game then Alex wins, no contest. Both would wipe the floor with Gabby Logan but all would crumble at the very sight of Manish Bhasin. MOTD presenting doesn't need a lot of football wisdom though, let's call a spade a spade! Half looked to be pre-written when I watched; Gary's job was to tease out the humour and draw blood from the stones rolled in next to him.

FWIW my favourite MOTD was the one when nobody spoke. When they all went on strike.

The interesting thing for me is who MOTD / BBC think they're trying to appeal to. My guess is they look at viewing figures and demographics and think they need to appeal to a younger viewer, but I'm not sure the presenter will do much for that anyway. The yoof probably aren't watching MOTD like they used to, I imagine they're consuming their football fix through social media and other sources.

MOTD is probably better off trying to capture more of the market that's grown up on it. I'd quite like to see them give it to someone like Danny Baker for a couple of seasons, a proper seasoned broadcaster.

She can't even speak well.

I have nothing aginst her, but she's an awful presenter. Someon that can't even pronounce the end of words should not be presenting flagship programs.

But of course she ticks all the boxes, woman tick, black tick, gay tick

Now thats all great if she was good at her job, but i personally don't think she is and i would hate to think she is getting gigs based on ticking the boxes rather than actual merit.

And before anyone says i'm anti-woman presenter - Gabby Logan would be superb for the MOTD gig. A proper presenter. So was Hazel Irvine, they exist but Alex Scott is not one.

Not for me. I just don't think she's a particularly good presenter. I don't see why some rate her so highly.

Chappers, or Logan would be better.

Logan was a bit of an animal in his playing days though

Spot on. You can go on Sky Sports and watch highlights etc on your phone now without all the gumpf that goes with it. I'd imagine it has a shelf-life to it now.

I'm with Texty though....I quite enjoyed the version when they were on strike!

Not an easy sell that though putting a cap on your audience reach.

The BBC in general need to appeal to a younger audience to stay current and scoop up as much market share as possible. They've been struggling for some time though and doing things on the cheap....hence the reason there's a constant churn of average police dramas!

The Beeb do love an inclusive tick box check too so what Alex Scott lacks in charisma, she makes up for in that respect.

Not sure why Colin Murray doesn't seem to get much TV work. He's superb on Radio 5 and hugely knowledgeable in comparsion to somone like Alex Scott.

Colin Murray? As in the countdown presenter??

I think he has plenty of TV work!

I was a fan of his on Radio 5 but he was absolutely awful years ago on MOTD2. I'm pretty sure there were even campaigns to get him off there

Maybe, but I think they also need to recognise where they can't or won't compete and the changing behaviours. They're better off capturing a big chunk of their addressable market than losing it in favour of trying to chase those who probably wont be watching regardless of who presents it. If they try to push water uphill with a fork they might be left with a smaller market share than they had before. Football Focus is a good example of where they've lost loads of viewers. They've lost half their viewers from 2019 when Dan Walker left. I could see MOTD going the same way.

As someone who doesn't have SKY Sports anymore I've got a bit of skin in this as I have been watching MOTD this season and do still enjoy it. I want to see it thrive sufficiently for BBC to justify paying for the rights.

I really like Alex Scott as a presenter, and felt that her and Jenas were being primed for a shot at the big one.

I prefer Chapman and Logan as presenters, but like Lineker when he got it, I'd imagine they want someone who is younger that can grow with the role and become the face of BBC Sport. I'd say those 2 are a bit old for that type of role

Is there any value you think, in terms of potentially increasing market share, in improving the quality of the analysis? Could make for an entirely different show.

I can't think of too many who have appeared on MOTD who provide any insight into the games/passages of play beyond the level of "perfect cross and sublime finish". And that might be just one of the problems.

The overriding qualification for the role should be wit. It's more than just reading scripted quips, there's a fair amount of ad-libbing. Des Lynam had it, and only a keen amateur's interest in the game. He had no specialist footballing insight and was just as good as Lineker, who rightly based his presenting style on Lynam's. Lineker has both wit and insight, but the priority is to entertain first and foremost. I'd even go with a comedian with a genuine passion for and interest in the game.

I don't think there has ever been a bigger hunger for proper tactical analysis and discussion than there is now so for me that is the route to go down. Make it a longer form show, vary the guests - out of work managers like Graham Potter, reputable journalists like Henry Winter.

It's absolute sh!ite for me in its current format. The same stale pundits/guests, nothing insightful offered and not enough time to make a proper job of it. I think a lot of people watch out of habit and because there is sod all else on at 10.30pm on a Saturday than because it's a worthwhile watch.

Most people have already seen the goals and main highlights, you can whizz through them on Youtube in 15-20 minutes within half hour of the final whistles blowing. Even my Dad in his 60s does that let alone younger people.

why?

Alex Scott fourth or fifth in the national all-time appearances stats. I’m not aware the Colin Murray has even played 1 league game, let alone had a 25 year career at the highest level. I could be wrong. He seems like a fully invested fan (in the true sense), but I can’t see how that trumps a career at the top level.

Mind you, Alan Shearer… So it’s possible I suppose. I put that down to Shearer being a bit simple and a poor communicator rather than not knowing anything about the game. Scott’s bright and a good communicator. She’d be fine if they chose her (and let’s face it, they probably will as the BBC are largely responsible for thrusting women’s football into the mainstream).

Lets be honest, she ticks a lot of boxes. I don't mind her as much as some people do.

Do people actually sit there and watch them analyse everything/talk twaddle. I prefer to record (or watch on iPlayer) so I can fast forward it all.

“ I prefer to record (or watch on iPlayer) so I can fast forward it all.”

This, I just skip all the waffle and watch the football, so don’t care who they appoint. They know feck all about us anyway, if I want someone’s opinion on the game then this is a much better and informed place for it. Listening to the likes of Lineker and Shearer is only appealing if you are an insomniac.
