Coote discussed giving player yellow before game 00:01 - Nov 27 with 4102 viewsDublinBlue84

Looks very bad for the refereeing fraternity now.

Media claiming now that Coote booked a Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski in a match against West Brom in October 2019, and messaged a friend saying: "I hope you backed as discussed"

This takes it to another level.

Not the point though is it?

Alioski was the sort of player you'd fancy for a booking - if the story is true then Coote could have tipped someone off he was going to book Alioski, knowing that the player was the type that would give an opportunity to do so.

And even more to the point, if the story is true then whether it was a definite yellow or not is irrelevant - a professional ref should very obviously not be engaging in potential spot fixing conversations.

If it was a booking, it was a booking and Coote didn't contrive it.

His messaging was clumsy, maybe sarcastic, doesn't mean he was spot fixing.

Happy to agree to differ.

I was talking about the subjectivity of the Alioski challenge.

Happy to agree to differ.

But it means nothing if you think the Alioski challenge was a clear yellow. The suggestion is he was going to get a booking during the match, whether it was a clear yellow or not in your opinion is irrelevant as it's alleged someone made money from a premeditated plan.

There are incidents in every match that after the event could appear clear, hence the Delap mention as it's fresh in the memory. The allegation that he had apparently mentioned he was going to book a specific player is the problem, not whether there is any debate over the card.

We clearly have differing positions on this. Happy to agree to differ. šŸ‘

Clumsy is a bit of an understatement.

If true its beyond idiotic as a referee to be discussing anything betting related, not least on a game he's personally responsible for officiating. Irrespective of whether the incident warranted a yellow, he's a lunatic if it's true.

It wouldn't surprise me if stuff like this is more widespread than we'd like to think.

How hard can it really be for a referee to surreptitiously influence bookings-related markets - stuff like players to be booked, or number of bookings etc.,

We've all seen so many games where referees have been crazily strict or lenient with cards, or have carded players for the most innocuous of challenges.

This.

It’s being stressed Coote got no financial gain and everything is alleged, but it’s crazy that betting is allowed on areas of any sport that can be determined by one person like yellow cards etc.

Yes, stupid to discuss betting as a ref.

Not evidence of corruption, but you're right that it's idiotic

It doesn't matter if the player made a challenge deserving a yellow if the referee has gone into the game intending to give him a yellow, the fact he had planned to give a card in advance to help out his mate is the only relevant information.

I’m surprised. I can only think of one game where I seriously considered whether the ref was on the take and even then you assume they can’t be. If he did tip someone off ahead of the game (whether the eventual card was for a genuine foul or not) that’s huge imo. If it’s all true and proven I hope he’s never allowed anywhere near the game again, at any level.

The problem is that almost regardless of whether the foul was a yellow card offence or not, the alleged ā€˜tipping off’ prior to the game enables the world to call everything into question.

Did the Leicester ref tip anyone off that he’d give Phillips two yellows? I highly doubt it, but if stuff like this is going on then every contentious decision becomes even more questionable.

Wonder what Dermott will make of this!

We don't know that do we.

We don't know the tone or context of the messages. Sarcasm etc.

Its a little more nuanced.
