If we stop analysing every game and look at the big picture there are the right sort of noises coming out of the investors / backers, etc - IMHO the plan ITFC have in place is one that fully covers a trip back to the Championship - I think McKenna is onboard with that too - why not ? 18 months ago we would have chewed someone's arm off to be playing championship football and now its a fate worse than death - thats the Human brain for you ..... so basically I think they will act smart in the January transfer window, do everything in the clubs power to stay up but no panics if we go down for a season - yes all clubs say we will bounce back but I'm pretty certain there will be no major "leavers" and no major drama if that happens - only a period of consolidation.
As for todays game - and the thing I love about KM - is the total B/S that its a must win or things look bad if we lose ..... football is a very funny old game (thanks Greavesey) and a struggle into FEB and one run of 5 wins changes everything - its about other clubs too ! I think / still maintain every kick of the ball this season should be enjoyed as a miracle as to how far we came so quickly and whatever happens will happen - its not life and death ..... enjoy todays game

Great post.

5 years ago things looked broken beyond repair.

KM has us playing brilliant football and we're competing in this league. Ask Fulham, United, Villa, Spurs, Liverpool etc if we're an easy game.

I am still certain we will stay up. KM is too good and the hard work of the squad will pay off.

Who will finish below us?

Other than Southampton.

All that is true, and I think it is as likely that we will finish 13th as 17th. There have been incredibly fine margins in all but 5 games this season, and we were competitive for long periods against both a pre-slump Man City and Liverpool.

But relegation is more likely- that's just basic maths. If we do get relegated then I would be hugely surprised if KM stays. But the same people who found him would be searching for and identifying his replacement, and a "house style" is established.

KM always says we should "trust the process", and that will still apply whatever the League table says at the end of the season, and even if he decides to move on.

Agree with the sentiment of the post, but IMO it's naive to think:

a) McKenna will stick around if we're relegated. The task here was much greater than Leicester or Southampton, and I don't think he'll come through this season with much damage to his reputation at all. With that in mind, logically he'll still be in the sights of lower-to-mid-table premier league teams who can offer what we, assuming we are in the Championship next year, cannot.

b) There will be no major leavers. Any of our players who have proven themselves in the Prem will be wanting to play there next season, which in itself is very difficult to overcome even if we don't need to sell. Expect the likes of Omari, Delap and Lief to leave (hopefully for decent money).

Even though Mark Ashton's proven himself very capable, it's a bit of a lottery if all of the above comes to pass, as we'll be looking to integrate a new manager and key personnel and bounce back at the first attempt. The key thing is really about enjoying that journey if/when it comes. As you say, it's not life and death. Football is supposed to be entertainment - enjoy the ride.

There’s no way McKenna stays this summer unless somehow all the prem jobs are sewn up. There just isn’t a scenario he takes a backward step career wise.

I wish fans would stop being so naive - especially when he’s looked at leaving twice only to stay on better money and terms. There’s no way we can do that a third time if there is prem interest.

Him and Delap are likely gone this summer alongside Leif, the key is building in a succession where we carry on up like other clubs not bounce around like the rest do.

A balanced post with some good points. I’m not keen however on phrases like “a trip to the championship”, others have posted “we’d bounce straight back”.
Admittedly, we hit our ultimate goal sooner than anticipated but to return at the first attempt, if we were to go down, would be a real challenge.
We’ve a number of players such as Hutchison, Davis, Phillips, Cajuste, O’Shea and Delap that could clearly move on. Realistically, KMc would be very hard to keep hold of.
The importance of staying up, even if it’s by goal difference can’t be underestimated.
