St Albans visit recommendations 17:12 - Jan 13 with 1094 views | MattinLondon | We’re going to go to visit the Warner Bros studios as that is where the Harry Potter films were made. It’s based in Watford and we’re going to stay in St. Albans. Please may I ask if anyone has any recommendations for places to visit whilst there? I know that there’s a Roman museum but that’s it. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

St Albans visit recommendations on 18:04 - Jan 13 with 943 views | Guthrum | The abbey is interesting, as are the ruins of Roman Verulamium. There was a full-blown battle in the market square during the Wars of the Roses and I think there is a commemorative plaque on one of the pubs. There was a second battle later in the same conflict, but that was out to the north end of town. The ruins of Buncefield used to be fairly nearby, but I think they have mostly been built over (English Heritage weren't interested).

St Albans visit recommendations on 18:11 - Jan 13 with 929 views | Plums | We did exactly the same a few years back. The roman museum was good. We were lucky and visited on a lovely sunny day that happened to be market day so there was plenty to see and do. I'd always recommend having a look at Treasure Trails for a fun way to explore new places that may not appear to have much https://www.treasuretrails.co.uk/

Ye Olde Fighting Cock Pub, meant to be one of the oldest pubs in UK. The Cock Inn, we had a really nice meal there but this was a while ago.

St Albans visit recommendations on 19:00 - Jan 13 with 842 views | Churchman | St Albans is nice. Been through it, to it etc over the years but don’t properly know it. It’s very historic, not just stuff from the Roman period but War of the Roses, nice Cathedral. De Havilland's aviation museum. It’s got a nice little town centre if your partner is into that. Some suggestions here: https://www.enjoystalbans.com/things-to-do/ If you play golf it has a golf course (played it) that is the true home of the Ryder Cup - Verulam Golf Club. It is the club where Samuel Ryder was a member along with his coach Abe Micthell.

St Albans visit recommendations on 20:21 - Jan 13 with 740 views | WeWereZombies | Can't let a St Albans thread go without a mention of The Zombies: 'Some sources state that Argent, Atkinson, and Grundy were at St Albans School, while Blunstone and Arnold were students at St Albans Boys' Grammar School. Both Blunstone and Grundy came from Hatfield and both sang in the choir there at St Etheldreda's Church.[22][23] Argent was a boy chorister in St Albans Cathedral Choir. They held their original rehearsals at the Pioneer Club, then situated on Hatfield Road, using equipment lent to them by the Bluetones. They met outside the Blacksmiths Arms pub in St Albans before their first rehearsal and gained their initial reputation playing the Old Verulamians Rugby Club there.' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Zombies

which reminds me I really must get hold of James Wrights book about Britains oldest pubs one of these days, needless to say whilst Ye Olde Fighting Cock is worth visiting, for novelty as much as anything as its a real tourist trap and had even before covid struggled to operate as a decent pub. and its not as old as its claimed, in fact might even date from a mere 300 years ago as a pub, called the 3 Pigeons, which for reference would make it 100 years younger than Ipswich's very own former Old Bell Inn & the Spread Eagle, so dont believe everything claim you see in pubs. the Robin Hood, near the station is a good pub, and the Beehive was good last time I went.
